Three people have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a man who died after an attack.

Northumbria Police said officers were called to Shields Road in Byker, Newcastle, at 19:25 BST on Tuesday.

The victim in his 20s was found to have "serious injuries" and taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by air ambulance, but he died a short time later.

Two men, aged 24 and 22, and a boy aged 16 are in police custody, the force said.

Police said a section of the road remained closed to traffic for investigative work, but previously said there was "no wider risk to the public".

Det Ch Insp Mark Atherton, from the force's Major Investigations Team, said: "We would like to reassure those in the local community that our officers remain in the area to carry out a wide range of inquiries to ascertain exactly what happened."

He appealed for information about what took place, adding it "could be of vital importance".

Newcastle City Council's Nick Hartley, a Green Party councillor representing Byker, said he and his colleagues had been in touch with the police about the assault.

"Our thoughts right now are with everyone affected and we will continue to work with the police, community safety officers, residents, local businesses and the council to build safety in our communities," he said.

Hartley said buses which normally travel down Shields Road were being diverted via Heaton Park Road and Heaton Road and many of the buildings in the area remained closed due to the police cordon.
