A cyclist has been killed in a crash on a road close to a major car plant.

The bike was in a crash with a black Mercedes AMG car on Nissan Way, in Washington, shortly before 01:00 BST on Friday.

A man in his 50s who had been riding the bicycle was declared dead at the scene and officers from Northumbria Police arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released under investigation.

Sgt Greg Huntley appealed for witnesses or anyone with footage of the area close to the Nissan car plant, taken around the time of the crash, to come forward.
