Firefighters making 'good progress' tackling blaze

Firefighters say they are making "really good progress" tackling a large fire on a Hull industrial estate, but they will be at the scene "for some time".

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said multiple crews were tackling the fire at Whites Skip Hire on Reservoir Road, which broke out at about 19:10 BST on Tuesday.

Humberside Police said Reservoir Road was closed. Clough Road was also closed but has since reopened in both directions, the fire service said.

Humberside Fire and Rescue group manager Claire Tait said: "The smoke plume was quite big, the incident in itself was manageable for us but we will be here for some time."

Tait said, at the height of the fire, crews used eight pumping appliances, a turntable ladder and an aerial ladder platform to get the incident under control.

A high-volume pump was in place to supply the service with water.

Businesses in the area were still operating, and there had been no casualties, she added.

Tait said the service could not say yet what caused the fire.

"It is going to be a really hot day today so we encourage all members of the community to avoid this area and don't do anything silly with cigarettes, barbeques or anything like that.

"Please try and reduce the demand," she added.

Humberside Fire and Rescue said it had received multiple calls on Tuesday, alerting them to the large waste fire.

"Crews arrived within four minutes to the fire well established and we have been tackling the blaze all night.

"We are currently still on scene and continue to tackle the incident," a spokesperson said.

The fire service asked people to only call 999 in a "genuine emergency" as it battled the blaze.

Humberside Police said Clough Road, between Bank Side roundabout and Starbucks, would remain closed throughout Wednesday.
