The beams at Worcester's Old Powick Bridge will reinforce the bridge, the county council said

A series of beams have been put in place under a flood-damaged medieval bridge in Worcestershire, ahead of a £5m restoration project.

Powick Old Bridge in Worcester suffered structural damage more than two years ago during a flood in February 2024.

In preparation for the multi-million pound repair job, set to start in 2027, a crane was used to put the temporary beams in place.

"These beams play a key role in reinforcing the bridge while repairs or maintenance are being carried out," a county council spokesperson said,

"By installing them under the support structure, engineers can ensure the bridge remains stable and safe during the project."

Powick Old Bridge has been a key historical landmark in Worcester, having played a role in the first engagement of the English Civil Wars, on 23 September 1642.

The crossing was also the scene of its final battle on 3 September 1651.
