A man has been jailed after admitting he twice strangled his ex partner.

Ashley Wayne Pointon, 33, from Stoke-on-Trent, was in a hotel in Leek with the victim in September last year when he strangled her, causing her to lose consciousness.

She escape to hotel staff and explained what happened, leading to Pointon being removed from the hotel, said Staffordshire Police. Pointon strangled her a second time in November at his home address, when she fled to a friend's house and called the police for help.

Pointon appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Thursday where he was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for two counts of strangulation.

Det Const Kelsey Johnson said: "We worked hard to gather evidence against Pointon, which eventually led to him admitting the offences in court.

"I would like to commend the bravery of the victim in coming forward and telling us what had happened.

"I hope this sentence shows we take such offences incredibly seriously and will work to secure prosecutions against those responsible."
