Family 'overwhelmed' after Arbroath FC hold silence for Minnie Merriman

The family of a girl who died after being found seriously injured on an industrial estate in Arbroath have thanked the local football team after it held a minute's silence in her memory.

Minnie Merriman, from West Yorkshire, died at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee Arbroath on Monday.

Her father has since appeared in court charged with her murder.

On Saturday Arbroath paid tribute to Minnie before the club's Scottish Championship match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

More than 1,300 fans attended the game at Gayfield Park, which is just a mile from where the schoolgirl was found.

Writing on Facebook Minnie's aunt, Chloe Merriman, said: "We really appreciate this as a family.

"My sister is overwhelmed with the kindness and love from Arbroath."

Minnie was discovered after officers were called to the Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath, shortly after midnight on Monday.

Her father Christopher Rice, 35, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, made no plea during an appearance in private at Forfar Sheriff Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody.

Police Scotland said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with Minnie's death and the other members of the family - who were camping in the area - are being supported by specialist officers.

In a statement, Minnie's family said: "We are devastated with the loss of our beloved, absolutely incredible, beautiful and brave Minnie Moo.

"Our family asks that our privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time."

Meanwhile, a close friend of the family has set up an gofundme appeal to support them.

Stevie Walker said they had endured "unimaginable heartbreak".

He added: "Until Minnie can come home, the family face regular travel between Yorkshire and Scotland, as well as accommodation and everyday living costs.

"They also need to replace the basic things that most of us take for granted after losing their home and belongings."
