Jail for man who carried out stabbing attack

A 20-year old has been jailed for stabbing a man in a Southend-on-Sea suburb, leaving his victim with life-changing injuries.

Oliver Champion, of Palmerston Road, Westcliff, admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife following the attack last November.

At Basildon Crown Court on Friday, he was sent to prison for seven and a half years.

His brother Oscar, 18, of Shetland Crescent, Rochford, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was given an 18-month community order.

The attack happened in Station Road, Westcliff, on 8 November at about 8.30pm.

The victim was being chased on foot by the pair. As he ran into Station Road, he fell against a wall after tripping.

The brothers then attacked him, and their assault came to an end only when a witness saw what was happening, causing the pair to flee.

Oliver Champion tried to evade justice by turning off his phone, staying away from home and making plans to leave Essex.

Police tracked him down in Southend four days later. He tried to flee but was stopped by an officer who challenged him with a Taser.
