Two die and three seriously hurt in crash
GoogleThe drivers of two cars have died and three passengers have been seriously injured after a crash on the A1.
It happened at the junction for Wandylaw, north of Alnwick, Northumberland, at 0400 BST on Saturday.
A silver Nissan Juke travelling southbound collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa travelling in the opposite direction, Northumbria Police said.
Sergeant Alex Partington said: "This is a devastating incident where two people have tragically lost their lives while three others remain in a serious condition."
A woman in her 50s in the Juke and a man in his 40s in the Corsa were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two passengers in the Juke - a woman in her 20s and a teenage boy – along with a female passenger from the Corsa in her 20s, were all taken to hospital.
A section of the A1 in both directions between Ellingham and Purdy Lodge was closed for about 10 hours, but the road has since reopened.
Officers from Northumbria Police's Roads Policing Unit are asking any witnesses to come forward.
