Police said the spikes at Glencruitten Woods in Oban were a "significant danger"

Police are investigating after spike traps and tied metal wire was found across a woodland trail in Argyll and Bute.

Officers said two incidents at Glencruitten woods in Oban presented a "significant danger" and were believed to be linked.

North Argyll Cycle Club reported the spikes to police after members punctured tires during a ride on 2 April. The wire was discovered this weekend.

The club said that the spikes had been installed in chicken wire to remain "upright and dangerous". It said members had monitored the trail after they were found.

Police Scotland urged people using Glencruitten woods to be vigilant and report any similar incidents.

Insp Kirsty Moore said: "One line of inquiry is that these two incidents are linked and patrols are being carried out in the area.

"The metal wire was placed intentionally across the path and represented a significant danger to walkers, cyclists, dogs, horses and their riders.

"This kind of behaviour is not acceptable. If not seen it could have caused serious injury."
