Young football fan's 970-mile ride in memory of grandad

A 10-year-old football fan has completed a 970-mile bike ride past every Premier League stadium in memory of his grandad.

Charlie, a Southampton FC supporter, cycled between all 20 top-flight grounds with his dad Chris in 16 days to raise money for Cancer Research UK after his grandad Mike died from cancer aged 65 last October.

The pair finished their challenge at AFC Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium on Sunday.

Charlie, from Bristol, told the BBC: "I did it just because I loved him so much and it was very hard watching him battle through cancer so I tried to raise money for other people to stay with their grandads longer."

Chris said Charlie originally wanted to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats before the pair adapted the idea around his love of football.

He suggested visiting every Premier League stadium instead and described the challenge as "ridiculously challenging".

"How Charlie got up and did it every single morning for nine, 10, 12 hours a day on a bike is unbelievable," Chris said.

He said some of the toughest stretches came on days without any stadiums to aim for, including parts of the route between Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town.

Charlie said: "It feels amazing. I'm so proud of myself."

Chris said his father, Mike, would have been "incredibly proud" of his grandson.

"They had a very special bond together," he added. "He'd just be overwhelmed with proudness."
