Suzi Perry 'nervous but excited' for Wolves

Television presenter and Wolverhampton Wanderers fan Suzi Perry has said she is excited but nervous for the new season in the Championship.

Wolves host Port Vale on Friday in the first round of the EFL Cup ahead of Blackburn in their first Championship game a week later.

New head coach Cesar Peixoto said his squad were looking to the future and were not scarred by the past few seasons of struggle at Molineux.

Perry said she had an expectation for the club to return to the Premier League, adding: "This is our best chance... if we don't go up this season, it gets harder, as we know in the Championship."

"We don't really know where we are with our squad," said Perry, who is an ambassador for the club charity Wolves Foundation.

"Obviously we were promised pre-season we would have a lot of new players which hasn't worked out - a slight misjudgement in timing I think - when you have the World Cup, I guess that can happen.

"But here we are almost on the eve of it, with two brilliant signings - one we don't know about who is unfortunately injured."

After a dismal last season, she said she felt the club had time to accept and prepare for the Championship, but she was encouraged by some pre-season games this summer with the new manager making an impression.

"I keep flipping in my head. Pre-season was pretty OK, a damn sight better than it was last year," she said.

"So it feels like Cesar's done a good job in gelling the players that he's got."

Wolves beat La Liga side Racing Santander 3-0 in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday.

"We seem to have some sort of identity off the ball, we saw the high press in the last game which was exciting."

"There's definitely some positives, Trippier's great... I feel deeply flattered that he came to Wolves. I think he'll do a sterling job for us."

But she said she was "bemused" by the sacking of Rob Edwards over the summer.

"I felt blindsided by it [the sacking] because I felt like, if you were going to let Rob go, you should have done it at the end of the season.

"It was mean, he didn't even know it was coming. It was awful the way it unfolded."

Overall, she said she felt West Ham were favourites for promotion, but still hoped that Wolves would excel too by starting well and staying motivated despite the squad being "really thin".
