Teenagers sentenced for supermarket machete attack
BBCTwo teenagers have been given custodial sentences after a machete attack at a supermarket in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
Nottinghamshire Police said it happened in the entrance foyer of Asda in Priestsic Road shortly before midnight on 13 March.
CCTV footage showed two groups talking near the self-service checkouts before moving towards the store's entrance. According to the force, two teenagers from one of the groups then produced machetes and launched the attack on three males.
Two boys, 16 and 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were each sentenced to 10 years at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday after admitting three counts of wounding and possession of a knife blade in a public place.
Police said the "unprovoked" attack left three males with "significant" injuries to their arms.
Det Con Chloe Baugh, who led the investigation, said: "This was a shocking and completely unjustified attack carried out in a public place where innocent members of the public could easily have been caught up in the violence.
"The victims were left with significant injuries and it is only through sheer good fortune that nobody suffered even more serious or life-changing harm.
"I hope these sentences serve as a stark warning to anyone who chooses to carry or use a knife that they can expect to face severe consequences."
