Fraud warning after phone scammers pose as police

A police force has warned that criminals are posing as officers to attempt to obtain personal information over the phone.

Kent Police said "several members of the public reported receiving phone calls" from people impersonating their staff on Wednesday.

"Victims were asked for information, from what falsely appeared to be a Kent Police number, that in the wrong hands could be used in an attempt to commit financial fraud," a spokesperson said.

Officers are investigating the incidents and supporting people affected, according to the force.

Surrey Police issued a similar warning in August.

Officers' advice is to never give personal information in response to an incoming call, particularly any personal bank information.

Kent Police asked anybody who believes they received one of the fraudulent calls to report it to the force or to Report Fraud.
