Families offered school readiness support

A campaign aimed at helping children under five prepare for school has been launched.

Peterborough City Council said Ready Steady Grow aimed to provide families with advice and activities focused on learning and "school readiness".

The project aims to increase the number of children achieving a Good Level of Development (GLD) by the end of reception year, which includes skills such as following simple instructions, using cutlery and getting dressed independently.

Katy Cole, council cabinet member for children's services and education, said it was offering "simple but effective activity ideas and encourage them to have fun together".

The council said the initiative would bring together advice, practical tips and support available through Family Hubs, making it easier for parents and carers to access help in one place.

Families can take part in free play sessions for young children, parenting courses, with additional tailored support available for parents who need extra help.

Activity ideas will also be available online and through the council's social media channels.

Over the summer holidays, Peterborough Family Hubs have also been running other free events including circus skills, forest school activities and exotic animal encounters, which organisers said could help children develop skills linked to school readiness.
