Vehicles full of waste dumped in street

Vehicles piled with rubbish have been dumped on a street in Wolverhampton.

They include a trailer left across a pavement on Leicester Street and a partly dismantled transit van full of waste on the back of a recovery truck.

They were seized and after no-one came forward for the trailer and van, and the claimant for the recovery truck did not have the correct documentation, the vehicles were destroyed, the council said.

"These vehicles had been used to fly tip a large amount of waste in our city, causing upset and safety concerns for residents," councillor Qaiser Azeem said.

On a separate occasion, tyres stacked on the recovery van had fallen on to the pavement, causing a hazard for pedestrians with gas bottles and fridges abandoned in the street.

Action was taken after complaints were made to the council, a spokesperson said.

A tipper truck that had been witnessed fly tipping its load of mixed waste on to Manfield Road and Strawberry Lane in July will also be destroyed after being seized

Earlier this year, an additional £257,146 in funding was agreed to pay for extra enforcement staff and security cameras to catch those who dump waste, the council said.

"This type of behaviour is absolutely unacceptable and local people should not have to put up with it, which is why our team stepped in with police to seize the vehicles," Azeem added.

"The council has the power to seize, investigate and destroy vehicles that have been used to dump waste, and we've used those powers to send a very clear message to anyone considering this illegal behaviour."
