National Trust issue warning after woodland fire

The National Trust says a fire could have put an "entire woodland at risk" as it is warning people not to have barbecues and to dispose of cigarettes properly.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service was called to Standish Woods, near Stroud, shortly before 15:00 BST on Friday after a member of the public reported a fire.

The National Trust said the blaze was started, abandoned and "lost control".

"If not for the quick response of our fire service the damage would have been significantly worse," they added.

"One simple mistake can lead to losing something we may never get back."

As the dry weather continues, the charity has urged people to have a picnic rather than a barbecue and to use an ashtray or butt box when putting out cigarettes.

"One spark is all it takes, don't take the risk," it said.

The fire service said three crews - from Stroud, Nailsworth and Gloucester Road - were sent to tackle the fire. They used a jet, beaters and water backpacks and left the scene shortly after 17:00.
