River footbridge to close while new deck installed

A historic footbridge over the River Severn will be closed for a month to allow its ageing timber deck to be replaced by a new plastic surface.

Telford and Wrekin Council said the Jackfield and Coalport Memorial Footbridge was a "vital link for residents, walkers and visitors" but the deck had "reached the point where it needs to be replaced."

The First World War memorial bridge was originally funded through public subscription to provide a safer alternative to the old ferry crossing, and councillor Carolyn Healy said it "holds a special place in our local history".

The bridge is scheduled to close from 7 September to 9 October.

The council said the new deck would be a "fibre-reinforced plastic surface" with a wood finish which would reduce future maintenance needs.

Matthew Day, the council's Principal Bridge Engineer at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "This material offers significantly greater longevity than traditional timber, while keeping the appearance people expect in such a sensitive historic setting."

While the work is being carried out, there will be information about alternative routes.

The council said surrounding businesses will remain open.
