Crash leaves motorway shut in both directions

A stretch of the M4 in Berkshire has been closed both ways after a crash.

The motorway is shut between junction 8/9 for Maidenhead and junction 10 for Reading. National Highways said the crash happened shortly after 21:00 BST and it believed three vehicles were involved.

Thames Valley Police said the westbound side of the motorway, heading from London towards Reading, was likely to stay closed for "a number of hours" with the eastbound side likely to reopen at some time on Thursday morning.

Traffic heading west is being diverted off the motorway at junction 8/9 and onto the A404M and east off at junction 10 to the A329M northbound. Drivers are being warned to allow extra time.
