Work starts on key Supertram junction

Major improvement works on Sheffield's Supertram network are set to begin this weekend as part of a £110m investment programme.

The upgrades will focus on renewing the Delta junction beneath Park Square roundabout, where all tram routes meet near Hyde Park and Fitzalan Square in the city centre.

More than 440 trams use the junction every day, with services on all Supertram lines passing through it.

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), said the scheme would help create a "more reliable" public transport system for passengers.

The work is due to run from 8 to 31 August and includes replacing track, points, signalling equipment and pedestrian crossings.

Track renewal is also planned where the tram line crosses Bernard Road near Hyde Park.

Tram services will continue to operate during the works, but all routes would be affected by timetable and service changes, with replacement buses running on parts of the network where trams cannot operate, SYMCA said.

Melanie Corcoran, executive director of transport at SYMCA, said: "We know carrying out this work will mean some disruption during the school holidays, and we're grateful for everyone's understanding while it's completed."

Passengers are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys, with "with longer journey times expected, particularly during peak periods."

A SYMCA spokesperson said all tram and multi-modal tickets would be accepted on replacement bus services, with children aged five to 15 able to travel free on the Supertram network throughout August.
