Jurats received £236k in fees during 2025

A total of £236,657 was distributed to Guernsey jurats in 2025, according to new figures.

It is an increase on the £174,940 collected in fees in 2024 and £150,542, the Policy and Resources figures showed.

Guernsey has 16 elected jurats who act as a jury in both civil and criminal cases as there is no jury system in the island.

The figures were released in response to a written question by deputy Gavin St Pier, who suggested the fees should be replaced with an annual stipend.

"I don't begrudge the relatively modest compensation which the Jurats receive by sharing these fees amongst themselves for the considerable time they devote to their role, but I do feel that the arrangements should be more transparent," St Pier said.

"The amounts fluctuate because the principal source of income comes from charges levelled for the jurats' role in the contract or conveyancing court and obviously the number and value of property transactions varies from year-to-year."
