Record number of hedgehogs taken in by rescue centre

A rescue centre says it is caring for a record number of hedgehogs after extreme heat and dry conditions left many dehydrated and malnourished.

Oxfordshire Wildlife Rescue founder Luke Waclawek said the situation was a worrying sign for the future of the species.

The rescue centre is currently caring for around 150 hedgehogs.

"We are seeing these animals coming in due to dehydration and malnourishment. The youngsters are losing contact with their natural mothers earlier than usual," he said.

Luke said the most rewarding part of the job was returning the hedgehogs to their natural habitat once they were well enough.

"Giving them back to the wild, that's the ultimate goal," he added.
