Fire crews are battling a large blaze at a garage in South Lanarkshire.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to a "well-developed fire" on Bothwell Road in Uddingston shortly after 18:00.

The affected garage and MOT centre is next to a BP petrol station and near a Tesco superstore. The fire service said it had sent six appliances and a high-reach platform.

Police have closed Bothwell Road at Main Street, Douglas Gardens and Old Glasgow Road, with diversions in place. No casualties have been reported.

Eyewitness Laurie Bradley said: "I just heard explosions and walked round. Flames were 60 feet (18.2m) in the air."

Ross Campbell, who lives nearby, watched as the fire engulfed the garage.

"It started at the back, then the fire spread and roof collapsed," he said.

"It's quite scary and you can see the smoke for miles."

People are urged to avoid the area while emergency services are on the scene and nearby residents should keep their windows closed.

Tesco said its supermarket close to the fire was closed while fire crews dealt with the blaze.
