Company signs contract to build new MK hospital

Contracts have been signed with a construction firm to build a new hospital for Milton Keynes.

As part of the government's New Hospital Programme, called "Hospital 2.0", Morgan Sindall Construction has been named as the company behind the work at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (MKUH).

Joe Harrison, the hospital's chief executive officer, said it was "vital that we continue to invest in our hospital to ensure we can meet the needs of our communities both now and in the future".

The trust previously said the work could start in 2027 and the hospital could open by 2030. The building will house maternity and children's services as well as surgical beds.

The hospital trust said Milton Keynes was "recognised as one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK and, as a result, demand on MKUH is continually increasing".

Harrison said it was a "significant and welcomed step forward", adding that the project would "create facilities that will benefit patients, staff and local people for generations to come".

Emma Curtis, area director for Northern Home Counties at Morgan Sindall Construction, said it was a "much-needed community investment that will create confidence and opportunity for the local construction supply chain and importantly serve patients for generations to come".

Simon Wood, NHS England's director of strategy and transformation in the East, said: "Having access to an appointed contractor and working alongside them to finalise the designs of the new sites should speed up the process from this point and optimise the designs, for the benefit of all patients who will be users of those hospitals in the future."
