Household recycling centre reopens after fire

A household recycling centre in a city has now reopened following a fire.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the site in Fengate, Peterborough, at about 10:30 BST on Saturday and firefighters put out the blaze in a skip, with the cause believed to have been "accidental".

Peterborough City Council said a slimmed down service had resumed on Sunday after the fire had forced the site to close.

In its latest social media post, the council said the centre was "temporarily unable to accept small electrical appliances" and visitors were urged to only attend if "strictly necessary" during the disruption.

It added that it appreciated people's patience and it would issue more updates on the service's operational levels.

On Saturday, the fire service had said crews from Stanground and Dogsthorpe, as well as an additional fire engine, were sent to the blaze.

There had been no reported injuries, a spokeswoman had added.
