Smaller travelling funfair debuts 'tallest ride'
Getty ImagesA scaled back funfair dubbed "Europe's largest" has returned and will debut its biggest ever ride.
The Hoppings has been taking place on Newcastle's Town Moor since 1882.
Despite being smaller this year, due to essential drainage works on the moor, the event is showcasing its largest ride - Elevate 85.
A spokesman for the event, said: "It's the biggest mobile ride in the world."
Ryan, who helps run the event, said it took an entire year to plan.
"So as soon as this year's stint is over, it is time to start planning the next one," he said.
"We work closely with the Freemen [of Newcastle] and the city council and we have our own health and safety team trying to improve year on year," he said.
Michelle, who has come up from Bristol to take part in the fair, said: "It's always a good event for us.
"Round trip is nearly 600 miles which we do once a year to be here.
"The people are lovely, always friendly, always have a smile on their face."
Meanwhile, it is Kieran's fourth year bringing his ride, The Bomber, to the fair: "It's great here, I love Newcastle.
"I have a good time here every year."
The Hoppings will officially open at 14:00 BST and will run until 28 June.
