Person dies after being hit by train near Ely

National Rail says disruption is expected on East Midlands Railway, Great Northern, CrossCountry, and Greater Anglia services

A person has died after being hit by a train in Cambridgeshire.

British Transport Police said officers and paramedics were called to the railway line near Ely at 11:16 BST on Friday and that the casualty was pronounced dead at the scene.

The force said inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the death were ongoing.

National Rail said "major disruption" was expected on several lines until 18:00.

The following routes are affected:

  • East Midlands Railway between Norwich and Sheffield, Manchester Piccadilly, and Liverpool Lime Street
  • CrossCountry between Stansted Airport/Cambridge and Birmingham New Street
  • Great Northern between Ely/King's Lynn and London King's Cross
  • Greater Anglia between Stansted Airport and Norwich, Colchester/Ipswich and Peterborough, and London Liverpool Street and Ely

"Whilst the emergency services carry out their work, all lines between these stations are closed," National Rail said on its website.

"Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised."
