Fire breaks out in six-storey residential building

Firefighters have tackled a blaze in a six-storey residential building in East Sussex.

Fire crews were called to Chesham Street in Kemptown, Brighton, at 11:54 BST on Monday following reports of a fire affecting the fifth and sixth floors of a building.

Nine fire engines, including an aerial ladder platform, supported by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, were at the scene, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said.

The fire was extinguished shortly before 16:30 and no casualties were reported, a spokesperson said.

It added that the incident had been scaled back to two engines, and investigations into the cause of the fire would take place "in due course".

The fire service said that it was working with other agencies including Sussex Police, Secamb, Local Authority Building Control and UK Power Networks.
