The extension would create extra rooms to address "large demand"

Plans to redevelop part of a care home to accommodate more residents and provide a hydrotherapy pool have been put forward.

Donwell House Care Home, in Washington, wants permission from Sunderland City Council to convert a single-storey wing into a two-storey building.

Applicant Deajan Limited said in documents submitted to the council that it would help address "accommodation shortages and large demand", with extra rooms, a cafe, communal areas and hydrotherapy pool.

It added the work would have minimal impact and "not disrupt the existing operation of the care home", while creating 10 full-time and 10 part-time jobs.

The car park would also be expanded with 15 extra spaces, according to the Local Democracy Reporting service.

A decision on the application is expected later this year following a council consultation exercise.
