Birmingham City came from behind to grab a point against Southampton as they secured a second successive Championship draw at St Andrew's.

In a game of three key headers, Jay Stansfield fluffed the easiest of them before Keven Schlotterbeck nodded Saints in front, only for August Priske to level for Blues after the break.

It leaves the Blues faithful still without a home win after three attempts this season - but against an in-form Saints side who had gone goal crazy at the weekend, boss Chris Davies can still feel relatively content.

However, on a night when Birmingham's record £15m signing Stansfield was again off colour in front of goal, it was perhaps illuminating that Davies did his only piece of deadline-day transfer business by signing Liam Millar on loan from promoted Premier League new boys Hull City, beneficiaries of Southampton's infamous breach of EFL rules.

Davies' Blues were the better side before the break - only for Stansfield to twice miss golden chances.

First he hit the post when clean though before then getting his radar right out when he arrived unmarked to connect with what should have been a routine header to Alex Cochrane's left-wing cross to the edge of the six-yard box. But the confidence-sapped frontman got too faint a deflection and somehow stuck his effort to the right of the target.

The hosts were then made to pay on the stroke of half-time when Leo Scienza swung over a right-wing corner from the right and Schlotterbeck showed just how to head a ball with his first goal for Saints on only his second appearance.

Within 10 minutes of the restart, Blues were level, again it was a header - and again it was a great contact as Priske met Patrick Roberts' right-flank cross to power in his first league goal of the season.

Priske might even have won it late on, but his right-foot shot curled just over - and, in fairness, a home winner might by then have been a little unfair on Saints.

Southampton are again on the road for Saturday's lunchtime date with last season's League One champions Lincoln City - the first time they will have visited Sincil Bank for a league game since March 1961, although they have twice been there in the League Cup (in September 1988 and November 1996).

Birmingham City now go into Sunday's local derby with Wolves at St Andrew's still seeking that first home win - but mindful of the fact that the men in gold and black have won there on all their last three visits (in 2016, 2017 and 2018).

The last time Blues beat Wolves on home soil was April 2015 - when an 18-year-old Demarai Gray, now 30 and back at Blues, hit a second-half winner.
