Image source, Getty ImagesAodhan Doherty has joined Falkirk on a season-long loan as the Northern Ireland Under-21 winger signed a new four-year contract with Blackburn Rovers.
The 20-year-old had played 14 times for Linfield in Northern Ireland's top flight before joining the Championship club last summer and made his first-team debut for Rovers against Hull city in the FA Cup in January, before featuring in three league games later the same month.
But he is now looking for more regular first-team football.
Falkirk manager John McGlynn says Doherty is not just a straight replacement on the left for Calvin Miller, who was sold to Hearts this summer, as he can play as a number 10 as well as out wide.
"He's a player we've been on the lookout for and have been scouting for some time," he told his club website.
"We've been trying to get him up here as soon as possible, so we're delighted to get him here now ahead of the league season starting next week."
Doherty will start on the bench against Stranraer in Falkirk's final Premier Sports Cup group-stage game on Saturday.
"It's another part of the rebuild of the squad and we're hoping to bring some more news on another one next week," McGlynn said.
"Buzzing" with his new Rovers contract and loan move, Doherty told Blackburn's website: "I'm just very grateful for the trust and belief that the club has shown in me and I'm ready to keep pushing on.
"Having that experience of being with the first team last season helped me a lot in terms of what I need to do and how I need to play to stay at that level.
"The main thing for me now is getting first-team exposure and playing plenty of games in the Premiership will really benefit me."
Blackburn Rovers face stiff competition from a string of Championship clubs to sign Sunderland midfielder Alan Browne, who spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough. However, Boro are not expected to explore another deal for the 31-year-old. (Lancashire Telegraph), external

The 47-year-old former Northern Ireland international had been working as first-team technical coach after moving up from leading the Championship club's under-21 side.
Johnson joined Blackburn as a player from Portadown in 1997, going on to make 81 appearances before signing for Birmingham City in 2002.
He returned to Ewood Park as an academy coach in 2015, twice stepping into the role of interim head coach in 2024 and February this year and was first-team technical coach and head of player development in 2019 during boss Tony Mowbray's first spell in charge.
"Tony's a fantastic guy. I had a really strong relationship with him when he was first here and I've kept in touch with him," Johnson told the Rovers website., external
"He's come through his health issues and now he's fighting fit and I'm delighted that he's come back."

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Kristi Montgomery may have signed a new contract but he still feels he has work to do.
The 22-year-old penned a long-term deal on Tuesday after 21 Championship appearances last season.
Despite starting the past four games, the Leeds-born Scotland Under-21 international thinks he is still making his breakthrough.
"I feel like I'm part of the group but I haven't done enough to say that I'm an established first-team player yet," Montgomery said.
"I've got the contract, that's obviously good. I want to make sure that I'm playing week in, week out to officially say that I'm a first team player.
"Last season I only had 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there. There are a lot of young players who have come through and done that. I just want to make sure that this season I can get as much game time as I possibly can."

Morishita: 'I want to be a leader now'
Ryoya Morishita is ready to lead from the front for Blackburn Rovers.
The winger, 29, is preparing for his second season at Ewood Park after signing from Legia Warsaw for an undisclosed fee in August 2025 and wants to use his experience to help the team have a successful Championship campaign.
"I feel much more comfortable to start pre-season with the team because last season I joined at the end of August and the Championship had already started," Morishita told BBC Radio Lancashire.
"Now I have to be a leader at Blackburn Rovers because I am nearly 30 years old and last season I played for me but now I have to play for Rovers and for the team - we have many young players so I have to take care of them and I think that is very important."
Rovers finished 20th in the Championship last season, five points clear of the relegation zone and the Japan international is confident they can have a successful year under new head coach, Tony Mowbray.
"Blackburn have the ability to be promoted so this season my individual goal is 10 goals and 10 assists and I believe we can take Blackburn to the Premier League," he added.
"The new coach has humour and makes us laugh. He is a very good guy and I love him."

Mowbray's 'people skills' will boost Blackburn - Cantwell
Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray is the perfect appointment for the club, according to captain Todd Cantwell.
Mowbray returned for a second spell in charge at Ewood Park when he was appointed in June.
"The one thing I felt this changing room needed more than anything was a manager like Tony - a manager who understands the players and has complete clarity around what he wants, but he's got the people skills that go with it," Cantwell told BBC Radio Lancashire.
"There's a lot of boys that are quite new to England, let alone the league, quite new to the country, so naturally they need a little bit of adaption time and when you're fighting down at the bottom of the league you're not getting that time.
"So, it's a real balancing act. I think the manager is absolutely the answer to some exciting times for Blackburn, for sure."
Rovers finished 20th in the Championship last season, five points clear of the relegation zone having sacked head coach Valerien Ismael in February before apppointing Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.
O'Neil rejected the offer to take the role on a permanent basis with Mowbray appointed after more than a year out of management having been sacked by West Brom in April 2025.
"He's everything that I think the club needs. He's experienced, he's got an absolute wealth of experience," said Cantwell.
"He's coached here before, so he knows the club, which I think is an important thing to have because I think like any club, they all have their own challenges, and they all have different support bases."

Blackburn Rovers have brought in former Wycombe boss Mike Dodds as their new assistant head coach.
Dodds leaves Oxford United, where he worked alongside former head coach Matt Bloomfield, to link back up with Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray.
The 40-year-old began his career as a youth coach at Coventry before spending 12 years within Birmingham's set-up.
He left Blues in 2021 for Sunderland where he worked alongside Mowbray as head of individual player development.
He took charge of 18 games as caretaker manager of the Black Cats, winning four matches, during 2023-24 before being appointed Wycombe head coach in 2025.
Dodds' stint at Wanderers lasted seven months before he was sacked, with the Chairboys having won 10 of 31 games.
