Ben House grabbed the only goal as Lincoln City beat fellow Championship newcomers Bolton Wanderers to secure their first league win of the season.

House's second-half effort earned a first victory over Bolton in 42 years and built on their encouraging midweek Carabao Cup win against Blackpool.

Bolton's had started the better of the two sides, with Sam Dalby and Ethan Erhahon both going close in the first half.

But the Trotters were unable to respond to House's 66th-minutes flicked finish despite dominating possession, meaning their unbeaten start to the season comes to an end.

The Imps, beaten in both their previous league games this season, were under pressure early on, with Dalby unlucky not to put the hosts ahead with a header from Samuel Iling-Junior's cross that hit the post.

Lincoln goalkeeper George Wickens then made a smart save to keep out Lewis Brunt's header, before Erhahon curled an effort just wide of the post before half-time.

The Imps responded well after the interval, with Ivan Varfolomeev denied by keeper Jack Bonham before they went ahead when Callum Elder's long throw caused confusion and House was on hand to finish tidily.

House's effort proved enough to earn Lincoln their first victory in the second tier of English football since April 1961 - and their first away win in the second tier since December 1960.

Lincoln next host Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday, while Bolton face an away fixture against Sheffield United.

Bolton Wanderers head coach Steven Schumacher told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I thought we played really well today, I thought what we asked the lads to do in areas we thought we could get into and cause Lincoln problems, we did that.

"We created loads of good opportunities and got into some dangerous areas. I said to them (the players) at half-time that the only negativity was that we were not ahead.

"We should have been ahead because we played that well. In the second half we had a ten-minute spell, where I thought a couple of decisions went against us. I thought a few of them were a bit soft.

"That gave them the momentum. Apart from that period I thought we were the better team."

Lincoln City head coach Chris Cohen told BBC Radio Lincolnshire:

"We spoke to the players and the staff in there and we are lucky to have them work with us.

"The staff we work with give really good plans in terms of match plans, in terms of formations and tactical work, but that was a result based on spirit. That's something we have had for a number of years, something this club has had for a number of years.

"We are really proud. To win three of our first five games - albeit two in the cup - shows the players are more than good enough to play at this level."
