Manchester City's push for a first Women's Super League title since 2016 was jolted by a surprise 3-2 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

City knew an away victory on Saturday could allow them to clinch the title without playing again, in the event that Arsenal drop points against Leicester City on Wednesday.

However, Andree Jeglertz's side may now need to win both of their remaining two matches to make sure of the title.

Kerolin's fifth-minute opener rewarded City's early dominance, but Madison Haley finished off a fine team move to bring Brighton level in first-half injury time.

Brighton turned the match on its head two minutes into the second half when Kiko Seike ran onto a Fran Kirby through ball and rifled a shot in at the near post.

The home side continued to threaten a shell-shocked City, and with 25 minutes remaining Haley headed in her second after Ayaka Yamashita parried her initial effort.

Khadija Shaw scored her 19th league goal of the season in the 86th minute to give City hope, but Brighton saw out just their second WSL victory over City in 15 attempts.

City had plenty of chances to put the game to bed in the first half as they took four shots and created four big chances.

Shaw, the WSL's leading scorer, hit the post after taking a pass from Lauren Hemp in her stride, and fired wide later in the half after Hemp found her brilliantly.

Kerolin should have scored her and City's second minutes before Brighton equalised, but she failed to beat goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in a one-on-one situation.

Brighton's response was impressive as City lost a WSL match after taking the lead for the first time this season.

Man City analysis: Champions-elect feel the heat

As the sun beat down on Broadfield Stadium in Crawley, it looked like Manchester City were going to put one hand on the WSL trophy.

The hunger of the visitors became clear within the opening 30 seconds, when Shaw intercepted an under-hit back pass from Moeka Minami but had her effort well saved and Aoba Fujino's follow-up hit the side-netting.

Shaw continued to lead the press and minutes later almost nicked the ball off the boot of goalkeeper Nnadozie. They got third time lucky when Kerolin fired into the top corner following another Brighton turnover.

Jeglertz would have known his side could not maintain that intensity all afternoon, but the way they dropped off after failing to convert several subsequent chances will concern him.

The second half was worse, if anything, as City created fewer chances than Brighton and had their high defensive line repeatedly exposed.

The left side of Manchester City's defence has been one of the few chinks in their armour this season, with Rebecca Knaak lacking pace on the turn and Alex Greenwood attack-minded and liable to leave space behind her.

On this occasion, City showed spirit to try and rescue a point from 3-1 down, but it was too late.

The only positive to take is that the title race is still in their own hands, regardless of what Arsenal do – but the pressure is on.

Brighton analysis: Kirby superb as Seagulls run continues

This was an excellent team performance from Brighton, and once again Fran Kirby was at the heart of it.

At 32 the former Lioness is perhaps into the final chapter of her career, but on Saturday she showed she still has the quality and drive that saw her win seven WSL titles during her time at Chelsea.

It was Kirby's genius first-time flick that laid the ball into the path of Haley to fire Brighton level at a crucial point in the contest.

From the cute to the sublime, she threaded an inch-perfect pass behind former England team-mate Greenwood for Seike to run on to and rifle into the top corner from an acute angle.

She completed the set with another defence-splitting ball to Seike, who cut the ball back from the byline for Haley to score her second.

Despite some strong performances, this was Brighton's first win against a top-four side this term.

Dario Vidosic's side are now unbeaten in four games in all competitions, and with an FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool to look forward to, are showing what they might be capable of next season.

What's next for these teams?

Next up for Brighton is a trip north to face Manchester United on Saturday, 2 May (12:00 BST).

Manchester City will host Liverpool at the Joie Stadium on Sunday, 3 May (12:00 BST).
