It's about belief and the fine details that make the difference at that level. We are getting better, improving the team, we have to learn and make the most of it."

On Europa League: "It's a symbol for the club, we are getting better, the momentum is big. For the fans it's going to be crazy. Proud to be in this position. We have earned to be there. Last season was tough, there were tough moments, we stayed consistent and earned this option at the end of the year. It's important to show desire, the connection with our fans. Another important game for us."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I'm extremely pleased to win again. We had a really tough week, Chelsea, Napoli, winning there and now against a really tough opponent in a difficult place. We had really good periods but didn't score and after that they can suffocate you especially when they decided to be really physical and very direct and we had to overcome a situation that in my opinion was absolutely unacceptable at this level. I'm very worried and very sad because this can never be a penalty ever.

"Are you surprised? Are you surprised? No. OK.

"It's a judo roll from the opponent. Ezri [Konsa] does nothing. Just watch it. We have a lot of cameras and VAR we have to take responsibility to protect the game. Today the game was unprotected and it could have cost us the game and the momentum which is a really, really serious thing.

"I loved the save from David [Raya] the way the team reacted, the way we go again and we go against everything, but this should never happen, it's not fair, and I am sad, very sad, in that sense.

"I'm making it very clear publicly because it's for the game, it's not only for Arsenal, this cannot happen at this level.

On David Raya's penalty save: "We should not talk about the save of the keeper, we should talk about what happened before that."

On Bruno Guimaraes' performance: "Beautiful, he came on, the goal, the assist, remarkable. That why we talk about the finishers and making that impact and being able to support and help the team. He was outstanding."

On the penalty: "It's unacceptable, at this level it can change the course of the season, the championship. I've seen it ten times over to be sure. When I saw it live, I thought it's not possible. It cannot happen. The 27 years I've been in football, it's not a penalty in any case, in any context, at any level, in any league."

On Bruno Guimaraes' goal: "He decided the game."

On David Raya's save: "Unbelievable. He's a player that decides matches when we need it. Big credit to Sunderland and the way they played and the way they are coached. They are a really good team, I don't want to take away credit from them. They make it very hard for you. They have courage and great understanding of what's needed. Extremely tough, extremely happy."

"We have had a really tough week, Chelsea we won, Napoli we won, then coming here and wining again."

Arsenal

Only Aston Villa (15) have scored more Premier League goals from outside the penalty area since the start of last season than Arsenal (12), while no side has scored more goals via substitutes in that period than the Gunners (12).

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya speaking to TNT Sports on Bruno Guimaraes' goal: "What a a goal. Especially on the time that he scored, coming to this place is so, so difficult. They make it very difficult, it was a big battle, very physical. We dealt with it very well, we defended well. We know how good they are in set pieces. At the end of the day, we got the three points, that's all that matters."

On saving the penalty: "It's a big moment, especially away from home. For the players and the team to have that faith and keep going and win the game, two minutes after we score. Even if we conceded a goal, we had the faith to get back in the game. It's important to keep the clean sheet because it helps us win games."

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris to BBC Match of the Day: "Frustrating result. Good game, especially in the second half. I think we went toe to toe with them and they are flying at the moment. We had the opportunity to score, I think it was deserved, [we] didn't score and thirty second after we conceded the goal. This is the level. I think they are relentless. When you don't seize your opportunities it's hard.

"The first half we were a bit reserved, respectful, knowing their threat and the way they play. The way they can damage your defence. So we were really well-organised, but we agreed at half-time it was important to show our quality with the ball. And that we did really well managing long balls at times and short balls when it was possible to play and we created chances.

"[David] Raya was one of the best players on the pitch today. It shows we are dangerous but not enough to score. We are really close. Winning is a process. They are at the top level right now. We were close this evening, it wasn't enough, but it was a good experience for us and our fans. We are getting better game after every game, it's hard to take but we need to go again.

"We have to believe and then it's a question of fine margins. Those fine margins are so hard to improve because it is the last percent and you need to work hard to get this one. We are in a good place. It's important to digest quickly because we have an impressive week ahead."

Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is being interviewed by TNT Sports.

Despite his team's victory, he is FURIOUS about the penalty awarded against his side at 0-0.

"It's unacceptable at this level," Arteta says.

Arsenal goalscorer Bruno Guimaraes to TNT Sports: "It was unbelievable, I feel very good. Everyone knows I had a difficult start through injuries in my short time. But I'm glad to be back and glad to play. And yeah, I score a beautiful goal, beautiful moment for me and my family and I am happy."

On scoring against Sunderland as an ex-Newcastle player: "Beautiful goal. A very good place, everyone knows my past, I had an amazing history at Newcastle. But now I'm trying to create a new history here and I start with the right foot.

On goalkeeper David Raya being the best in the world: "Definitely. Very good saves. He keeps us alive in the game, that unbelievable moment saving the penalty. I think after this moment we want [from it] a big confidence to play forward and score our goal. Everything for this guy he's an unbelievable player."
