Substitute Atsuki Ito scored with his first touch to settle this thriller and earn Bolton Wanderers their first win against Norwich City at Carrow Road in 26 years.

The Japan midfielder, signed from Gent last month, was only on the pitch for two minutes when he hit his first Bolton goal, on his second appearance.

Norwich, who lost 4-3 for the second successive Championship game, took the lead through Mohamed Toure and again through Ruairi McConville, while Jack Stacey scored their third.

But Bolton netted through Thierry Gale, Gaika Larrazabal and Sam Dalby before Ito came off the bench to settle the contest.

Norwich began the goalfest in the fifth minute, when they broke forward and Andre Brooks fed Toure to lash home from the edge of the area for his sixth of the season.

Neither side could defend, and Bolton levelled three minutes later when Ruben Rodrigues found Gale on the left and he cut inside to beat Norwich goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic far too easily at his near post.

Norwich suffered another blow when top scorer Toure went off after just 15 minutes with a suspected dislocated left shoulder. The Australia striker's loss was not felt immediately and they managed to restore their lead four minutes later.

Oscar Schwartau swung over a corner to the back post, where Bolton let McConville head home his first senior goal - the fifth time Wanderers have conceded from set-pieces this season.

Back came Bolton, and after Kyliane Dong fired just wide, they levelled on 42 minutes when Larrazabal's 20-yard drive from Max Conway's cross deflected off Ben Chrisene and past Kovacevic.

The visitors took the lead just two minutes into the second half when Dong played in Dalby and he finished superbly for his third goal of the campaign.

The Canaries rallied and on 61 minutes substitute Paris Maghoma, who spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Bolton, fed Stacey on the right and he fired into the net via the inside of the far post.

Norwich were caught napping again, though, when they failed to deal with keeper Gavin Bazunu's long goal-kick and Ito shifted the ball on to his left foot to score inside the near post.

Norwich finished with 10 players because Chrisene went off injured in the final stages after all their substitutions had been made, and they might have snatched a point in stoppage time through a McConville header.

Some Norwich supporters booed at the final whistle, unhappy at seeing their side languishing in 17th when they expected to see them pushing for promotion.

Their defence is as watertight as a sieve and they have shipped 17 goals in their nine games - the joint worst in the Championship, along with Burnley.

Eight of those have come in their past two league games and they desperately need to tighten up at the back.

They could have defended better for at least three of Wanderers' four goals, and they are not going to win promotion playing like this.

Bolton celebrated their first back-to-back Championship wins since 2018. They are up and running on their return to the second tier and have climbed to 15th - five points above the relegation zone.

Summer signings Larrazabal and Ito look impressive, having scored their first goals for the club.

Norwich boss Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"It was a frantic game today, a really frantic game in every sense. Going in front with a good goal, dominating the game, then from their first attack, we got a goal against us when we didn't defend good enough.

"We had several good attacks, we scored three goals and we should have scored even more. But four goals against, and they did not do something very special or really classy. It was more because we were not good in those moments.

"[The goals] are individuals. We have so many players behind the ball in these moments. It's about winning the duels, being aggressive on the ball.

"All the things we talked about in these last weeks. I have the feeling the players lost their heads after conceding the first goal."

Bolton manager Steven Schumacher told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"It was a brilliant game. It shows character and the traits we saw from the team last year. That's what we're instilling; that culture, that spirit.

"I said to the players before the game that over the first seven games in the Championship I've been so proud of them. The way they handled it, the way they've taken the game to everybody.

"I said to them at the very start to play with no fear, which we've done. When we've had setbacks, we've shown togetherness and come back. We haven't let our heads drop and these are the signs of a good team."
