Will Lankshear came off the bench to score his fourth goal for Middlesbrough as they beat Doncaster Rovers in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The £10m striker netted just six minutes after being introduced at the Club Doncaster Sports Village to help avenge Boro's 4-0 loss to Doncaster in last season's first round.

Boro boss Kim Hellberg left Lankshear on the bench in one of five changes to start Kyle Joseph and he responded with his first Boro goal since his £4m move last month from Hull City.

Jeremy Sarmiento added a late third for the Championship outfit and Isaac Hutchinson salvaged some pride for Doncaster when he scored in stoppage time.

League One Rovers threatened on the break and Teessiders goalkeeper Sol Brynn saved a couple of shots from Alfie May either side of a Hutchinson effort.

Boro finally settled and put Doncaster under sustained pressure as Rovers debutant Josh Clarke denied Morgan Whittaker twice either side of a Sebastian Berhalter shot in quick succession.

This pressure told on 34 minutes when Sarmiento crossed from the right for Joseph to hook the ball home expertly from 10 yards out.

Doncaster refused to lie down and Bayley McCann, son of Rovers boss Grant, who was making his first start, shot wide from an enterprising run before Sean Grehan hit a right-foot effort across goal.

Boro showed their strength in depth and Hellberg brought on Ashley Phillips for his debut following his initial £7m move from Tottenham Hotspur, along with the red-hot Lankshear.

And the latter scored in the 78th minute when he finished right-footed with ease to take his tally to four goals in four games.

Doncaster were beaten and Sarmiento confidently lifted the ball, from Phillips' pass, over the advancing Clarke three minutes from time for his second goal in two games.

Rovers, who have yet to win over 90 minutes in four matches this season, got the goal their efforts deserved in the second minute of stoppage time when Hutchinson slotted home his first goal since his move from Bristol Rovers last month.
