Haaland's goal on Sunday isn't the first time there has been a controversial goal with a player in an offside position in a Manchester derby. Back in January 2023, Man United won 2-1 against Man City. Bruno Fernandes scored to take his side level, despite the presence of Marcus Rashford in an offside position. City's protests that he had interfered with play went ignored despite the flag going up.

Rashford was clearly offside as he chased Casemiro's pass, but did not touch the ball, leaving it for Fernandes to whip his finish beyond Ederson.

City's argument was that Rashford was having a significant impact on the incident even without touching the ball because his presence clearly put him in a position where he had an effect on Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji's ability to make a challenge.

To make a decision in 10, 20 seconds is not easy for them. Sometimes they make mistakes. I make mistakes, players make mistakes. It's part of our job.

"It's also complicated for them."

Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca asked if Ryan McAidoo, Kaden Braithwaite and Floyd Samba - and any other academy players - will be involved in Thursday's match: "These three work with us every day, unless they go with the second team to get minutes. They will all be involved tomorrow - I am not saying from the beginning, but they will be with us.

"We have a session in the afternoon and we'll see if we need some more players.

"When we started pre-season we had many young players and we just decided to keep these three because we think they can be here with us and improve. At some point, they will get a chance for minutes.

"McAidoo already played in the Premier League, Braithwaite got minutes against Crystal Palace. The only one [who hasn't] is Floyd - but I'm sure he will soon get some minutes."

On the impact of the suspension: "It's a big one [blow]. He was doing well with us. He started quite well [before his red card]. Now he is out tomorrow and for Sunderland and Liverpool. Then he is back again."

"The ones that are going to play, I'm sure that they are going to play important games, in the Premier League or Champions League. Now it's early season with no injuries or suspended players. In November, December, January and February, with the amount of games, we will need rest.

"The players that are going to play tomorrow, it's an opportunity for them to get better and better. At some point we need them."
