Kate O'Connor has been going fantastically. She started off with a personal best in the hurdles, she came out in the long jump with a fantastic personal best.

The javelin was over 50m, which we know she is so capable of. The long jump is a crucial event in the heptathlon as there are big points to play. The position shifted about after the long jump.

It is great to see her riding on the success of her previous events. In heptathlon, you get these rare opportunities. It is hard to get a heptathlon where everything goes your way, and she is in that situation now.

As a heptathlete, you tend to try and peak two or three times a year.

For Kate O'Connor, to come off the back of that amazing Commonwealths gold straight into the Europeans and perform the way she is unbelievable.

Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson is out of medal contention in the heptathlon as her struggles in Birmingham continue.

The 33-year-old has been struggling with injuries andentered Saturday 324 points off the pace in 16th.

Johnson-Thompson managed just 5.77m in the long jump before throwing 36.92m in the javelin.

That meant the two-time world champion drifted to 19th place, 780 points behind O'Connor.

Her GB team-mate Jade O'Dowda sat 13th, 491 points in arrears of the pace-setting Ireland athlete.

Ireland's Kate O'Connor has moved into pole position for heptathlon gold with one event remaining.

Newry-born O'Connor entered Saturday morning in third place after four events, just 42 points behind overnight leader Adrianna Sulek-Schubert, and her personal best form continued in the long jump with a leap of 6.55m.

The 25-year-old Commonwealth Games gold medallist followed up with 50.16m in the javelin to take her overall total to 5,812 points, 51 ahead of Netherlands' Emma Oosterwegel (5,761) with another Dutch athlete, Sofie Dokter, in third (5,741).

The heptathlon concludes this evening with the 800m at 19:45 BST.

Italy won two race walk golds on Saturday morning to extend their lead over Great Britain in the medal table.

Spain also moved up the standings after winning the other two gold medals on offer in the morning session.

Great Britain failed to win a gold medal on Friday while Italy won two through Nadia Battocletti in the women's 10,000m and the irrepressible Gianmarco Tamberi in the men's high jiump.

Ireland's Kate O'Connor has taken the lead in the women's heptathlon, jumping from third to first after a strong performance in javelin.

She is followed closely by the Dutch duo Emma Oosterwegel, 51 points behind, and Sofie Dokter who trails O'Connor by 20 points.

Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson registered a 5.77m jump - more than a metre below her personal best - on her first attempt before withdrawing from the long jump.

The result left her 20th in the standings following a disappointing first day of the heptathlon amid a season disrupted by injury.

But in Birmingham, at her final opportunity to compete a major championship on home soil, Johnson-Thompson continued to compete in the javelin.

"I thought she might retire after [the long jump withdrawal] but she is enjoying the experience," Olympic gold heptathlon medallist Jess Ennis-Hill said.

"She wants to come out and perform for the crowd that have come to watch and if she feels that she is not putting that injury at risk, that she's come into the competition with, then she's happy to continue."

The 33-year-old former world champion best throw of 36.92m took her up to 19th in the standings.

The heptathlon concludes with the 800m which begins at 19:45 BST.
