English powerlifter Matthew Harding won Commonwealth Games silver in the heavyweight category with a points total of 131.

The former Paralympic swimmer failed in his final attempt to lift 202kg but his successful 199kg lift in the second round was enough to secure the silver.

Riluwan Idris got the gold for Nigeria, while Jhandu Kumar of India earned the bronze.

It rounds out a successful day in powerlifting for England athletes, who also earned a gold through Mark Swan and a bronze for Olivia Broome in the lightweight category.

However, Louise Sugden missed out after coming fourth in a record-breaking heavyweight women's event.

Nigeria's Folashade Oluwafemiayo set a world record twice, lifting 172kg and then 175kg on her way to gold.

The heavyweight category, designated for athletes with a body weight over 72kg for men and over 61kg for women, is decided by a formula to rank lifts fairly against the athletes' body weight.

England's Olivia Broome claimed a bronze powerlifting medal in the lightweight category with a points total of 106.6.

The 25-year-old completed a lift of 119kg to secure a place on the podium, adding to the silver medal she took at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Broome also took bronze in the 2020 and 2024 Paralympics.

Esther Nworgu and Esther Oyema earned gold and silver for Nigeria, with points totals of 119 and 115.5 respectively.

England team-mate Charlotte McGuinness came fifth with a lift of 110kg, leaving her with a points total of 96.9.

The lightweight category, designated for athletes with a body weight up to and including 61kg, is decided by a coefficient formula to rank lifts fairly against the athletes' body weight.

Broome's bronze is England's second medal at the 2026 Games following Mark Swan's gold in the men's event.

England's Mark Swan won the first gold medal of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a dramatic victory by two decimal points in the lightweight powerlifting competition.

The 25-year-old completed a lift of 222kg - more than three times his body weight - to finish tied with Nigeria's Roland Ezuruike on 153.9 points going into the final round.

Both athletes failed with their final lifts, but Swan took gold based on a coefficient format related to the respective athletes' body weight.

The Englishman, from Seaham in County Durham, told BBC Sport: "To realise that I'd won, it's hard to believe. I thought I'd maybe got a bronze.

"My coaches said 'no Mark, you've won', but I couldn't believe it. It hasn't sunk in yet, but I'm sure it will.

"To get the first medal, especially gold, for Team England in the very first medal event, it's absolutely huge."

Swan, who won silver at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, attempted a world record-equalling lift of 232kg in his final attempt but was unsuccessful.

The lightweight category, designated for athletes with a body weight up to and including 72kg, is decided by a formula to rank lifts fairly against the athletes' body weight.

England's Olivia Broome claimed the bronze medal in the women's lightweight category with a points total of 106.6.

The 25-year-old completed a lift of 119kg to secure a place on the podium, adding to the silver medal she took at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Team-mate Matthew Harding won silver in the heavyweight category with a points total of 131.

Team NI will have four weightlifters at the Games in Glasgow, twice as many as in 2022.

Harrison McGrogan is the youngest of the four and he will compete at his first Commonwealth Games in the 71kg category.

The 18-year-old, who was previously a rugby scrum-half, claimed victory in the British Championships in the 71kg.

Omar Keshta will also compete in his first Games in Glasgow in the 110kg+ weight category.

Hannah Crymble is back for her second Games after finishing sixth in Birmingham. The 30-year-old, who balances weightlifting with her full-time job as a nurse, is a back-to-back British champion in the 63kg.

Kaitlin Saunders is preparing for her first Games after being inspired to take up weightlifting after watching the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

A former gymnast and CrossFit athlete, she lifted the qualifying standard at 77kg.
