Elena Rybakina speaking on court after beating Naomi Osaka: "I wasn't expecting that. I played really well today and feeling the ball was really good from my side.

"I am super happy with the performance, I knew that no matter the score, I needed to focus on each ball because everything can change quickly, she is also a very aggressive player. I am very glad with how I played today.

"Of course I want it [to become world number one], I don't know anyone who won't want this. I tried to approach it the same way and do everything I can and fight to the end of my next match, let's see what is going to happen.

"If I serve as well as I did today, I think I can do well. Let's hope it goes well my way."

Given the performance we have just seen from Elena Rybakina, it is something of a surprise this is the first time the 27-year-old has made it to the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.

On that showing, she can go much further.

One more win here and Rybakina will be the new world number one.

Rybakina continued forging her way to the finish line, the serving was like a masterclass and she just seemed to be so clear in what she was doing.

It was like she was only worried about what she could handle. She didn't have to do too much moving.

Huge cheers from the crowd on Louis Armstrong as Naomi Osaka secures the hold.

She shows great resilience to stave off those two match points and then slaps a forehand winner down the line to win the game.

Lots of work still to do, though, because after a quick sit down and a drink, Elena Rybakina will serve for the match.

Elena Rybakina is closing in on victory and brings up two match points.

But Naomi Osaka is not done yet. She saves both, the second with a booming serve down the middle and then moves to advantage.

Rybakina nails a backhand into the corner on the next point, though. Back to deuce.

Elena Rybakina is one game away from the US Open quarter-finals.

She's not giving Naomi Osaka even a sniff of a break.

Another ace down the T makes it 40-15 before a forehand powered into the corner wraps up the game.

Osaka will serve to stay in the match.

Oh dear.

The game starts unfortunately for Naomi Osaka as Elena Rybakina's forehand whacks into the net chord and falls on the Japanese 13th seed's side.

From there, though, the problems of our Osaka's own making. Two double faults hand Rybakina two break points and then Osaka dumps a backhand into the net.

The first got away from Osaka after double faults cost her a break, this time the match could be slipping away.

That break of serve didn't last long for Arthur Gea.

France's Arthur Gea, on his US Open debut, has broken early in the first set of his fourth-round match against Botic van de Zandschulp.

The 21-year-old played three rounds of qualifying and only got into the main draw as a lucky loser, then has played 14 sets across his first three matches.

What a story it would be if he makes it through to the last eight.

This second set has been much more like what we all expected from this match.

The problem for Naomi Osaka is that the way the first set got away from her means there is no margin for error.

Elena Rybakina is looking pretty imperious on serve and holds again with ease.

I am getting the sense that Osaka is getting a bit edgy and uptight here.

Danger is brewing for Naomi Osaka again at 15-30 but she keeps Elena Rybakina at bay.

An 11-shot rally could go either way but Osaka gets it done.

The break point does come, though. Forehand lasered cross-court for a winner. Unstoppable from Rybakina.

Once again, Osaka has to dig deep and a booming forehand of her own, that Rybakina can only put into the net, saves it.

A couple of big serves later and the two-time champion has secured the hold.

Elena Rybakina races into a 40-0 lead and another comfortable service game looks on the cards.

However, she struggles to get her first serve in from there and Naomi Osaka wins the next couple of points.

No panic from Rybakina, though, and despite another first serve going awry, the second proves good enough this time as Osaka's return sails long.

That's an important hold for Naomi Osaka.

Elena Rybakina continues to play with such confidence, making everything look so easy, and brings up a break point.

But Osaka slaps an ace down the T to draw the biggest cheer of the match so far from the crowd.

From there the Japanese star comes through, showing great resolve. A couple of unforced errors from Rybakina will give Osaka encouragement too.
