1991 world champion on BBC Two

Brilliant from both players and what a finale we've got tomorrow afternoon. What a game.

  4. Zhao draws level overnightpublished at 22:20 BST 28 April

    Zhao 8-8 Murphy

Big effort from the defending champion capped with an exhibition black around the houses that produces whoops of delight from the Crucible crowd.

What a spectacle they've been treated to tonight on both tables - and what a Wednesday we have in store.

Both games tonight poised at 8-8 - and Zhao Xintong will be a relieved, yet happy, man after fighting back from 8-6 down.

    Zhao 7-8 Murphy

It's a bit of hit and hope from Murphy - and what d'ya know, he gets the red safe, much to the crowd's amusement as they listen to John Parrott's assessment on commentary in their earpieces.

Well, I thought it was safe... but Zhao Xintong pulls out a stunning cut that simply didn't seem possible.

Murphy faced with a very tough situation with just two reds remaining.

Snookered on both, it seems. He takes an age to work out what to do but is well wide with his attempted escape.

Oh actually he can see one of the reds - so after a second miss, he's warned he'll lose the frame if he fails to make contact...

    Zhao 7-8 Murphy

Cagey end to the final frame of the evening on the other table.

Shaun Murphy just took a couple of attempts to get out of a nasty snooker behind the yellow and he's 54-29 adrift.

    Hawkins 8-8 Allen

    What a session of snooker.

Mark Allen bounces back from a 5-3 morning deficit to level matters up but that doesn't tell the half of it.

Two nail-biting frames at the start and end of session decided on pink or black - both won by Allen - with a flurry of huge breaks in between.

    Barry Hawkins hit a 140, 96 and 89 while Allen notched a 138 and 131.

A fascinating final session awaits on Wednesday morning (10:00 BST).

    Hawkins v Allen stats
  9. Allen levels after Hawkins miss on pinkpublished at 22:05 BST 28 April

    Hawkins 8-8 Allen

    No, he can't!

One of the few mistakes of the past two hours of frankly awesome snooker.

Barry Hawkins leaves himself a tough pink along the bottom cushion - and it stays in the jaws.

Mark Allen knocks it in much to his own relief, having thought that frame had been pinched from him. Instead he's the pincher, not the pinchee.

    Hawkins 8-7 Allen

Barry Hawkins has developed those difficult reds expertly.

    Can he clear?

    Hawkins 8-7 Allen

    Rob Walker
    Snooker commentator for BBC Sport

Incredibly, this is the first frame in the last seven where both players have potted a ball.

That is how unbelievable the break-building has been - single-visit snooker.

But there is a bit left in this one.

  12. Postpublished at 22:00 BST 28 April

    Hawkins 8-7 Allen

Potential big twist as Mark Allen misses frame-ball red with the rest.

He's 57 ahead but still 67 on - and Barry Hawkins is on the black after potting the red that Allen left.

Still two reds on the cushion though, very tough clearance - but after what we've seen tonight, nothing is impossible.

  13. 'A bombardment of breaks'published at 21:52 BST 28 April

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Two

This afternoon's snooker was cat and mouse - this evening is more like Rocky Balboa v Clubber Lang on both tables.

    It's a bombardment of breaks.

  14. 'Crucible has gone century mad'published at 21:47 BST 28 April

    Zhao 7-8 Murphy

    John Parrott
1991 world champion on BBC Two

The Crucible has gone century-mad tonight, bonkers. Everyone clearing up everywhere you look.

  15. Zhao hits latest tonpublished at 21:47 BST 28 April

    Zhao 7-8 Murphy

    This is can't miss snooker.

As in you can't miss watching it - and you can't afford to miss if you're playing in it.

Shaun Murphy finds that out after an off-target red to middle. Zhao Xintong clears the table with the latest century break of the night, a 117.

His 82nd ton of the season, Hazel Irvine informs us - well ahead of his nearest rival.

Zhao Xintong holds his breath as a red with the rest catches the knuckle and hovers over the left corner pocket.... and.... drops.

Opportunity for the reigning champion to again, as has been the case in both games tonight, answer fire with fire.

  17. 'Best session of the tournament?'published at 21:39 BST 28 April

    Steve Sutcliffe
BBC Sport at the Crucible Theatre

Is this the best session of the World Championship so far?

Four players all going for their shots, all making big breaks in matches that are going back and forth.

Certainly is for me, Steve - unreal standard.

  18. Allen responds with 131published at 21:39 BST 28 April

    Hawkins 8-7 Allen

Can't keep up with this to be honest.

This has to be up there with the highest-quality session of snooker at the Crucible ever.

Both tables but especially this Hawkins-Allen QF.

A third successive ton. Mark Allen slightly mars his copybook by missing the final black so it's just 131, failing to equal his 138 a couple frames back. Unbelievable snooker from both these fellas.

  19. Murphy restores two-frame leadpublished at 21:35 BST 28 April

    Zhao 6-8 Murphy

The players on both tables are not missing much at all.

And when they do, punishment is swift.

Shaun Murphy is striding around the table in increasingly confident mood.

Losing track of how many half-century breaks we've had tonight but it's a lot. Murphy adds to that with a 65 to ensure he will not be behind overnight. Two frames to come on both sides of the divider.

WRT fouls and misses; having been at The Crucible last week, it was interesting to note that because of the new ‘posh’ seats at the top-end of the table, the marker sits halfway up the side of the theatre. I assume this is why the referees are wearing earpieces.
