  1. Clark holes giant birdie puttpublished at 16:48 BST

    Clark -7, D Johnson -1, Woodland +1 (13)

    Huge!

What a putt from Wyndham Clark - and nobody would have called that after he was in the jungle off the tee.

His reaction to that 30-footer for birdie? A big fist-pump.

    He's feeling it.

  2. Bogey for Macintyrepublished at 16:47 BST

    MacIntyre +1 (12*)

Bob Macintyre walks away with bogey after missing a putt from 15 feet - he left himself too much to do.

    Back to one over.

  3. Fighting to make the cutpublished at 16:42 BST

    Rai +2 (14)

Aaron Rai is putting together a gutsy second round.

Following a 74 to start, the USPGA champion is inside the cut line and 2 under for the day. If he can hang on, he’ll have a chance to make another weekend major charge.

  4. Bogey for Brysonpublished at 16:40 BST

    Fitzpatrick -1, DeChambeau +4, Hovland +6 (13)

Matt Fitzpatrck stops the rot with a par following his two bogeys, but now Bryson DeChambeau has played his way back into trouble by missing his third putt from five feet or less today.

He did the hard work to be escaping the bunker to knock it close with his third, but that big putter of his has been ice cold today.

  5. Postpublished at 16:40 BST

    Clark -6, D Johnson -1, Woodland +1 (12)

That is some grisly fescue over there on the left for Wyndham Clark off the 13th tee. He's in no-man's land.

Danger written all over this shot but the 2023 US Open champion handles it very well to thump it out of there and flight his ball all the way to the green.

Two putts from 30 feet to note down par and get out of there.

  6. Rose looking to kick onpublished at 16:38 BST

    Rahm E, Rose -1, Spieth +4 (10)

Justin Rose looks at his ball in disgust. His approach finishes 40 feet from the pin, and he wanted it much closer.

He's also unhappy with his birdie attempt, but it's a solid par.

Jon Rahm makes his par more emphatically, holing from 16 feet.

  7. Another Thomas bogeypublished at 16:37 BST

    Thomas E (12*)

Shinnecock Hills is just biting back a bit now, with Justin Thomas carding a second bogey in three holes to drop back to level par and negate a lot of his good work on the front nine.

He found the bunker next to the third green, and could only get his escape to 30 feet, resulting in a two-putt bogey. These players just need to be careul now as quietly a few of them are heading the wrong way - things could quickly get out of hand.

  8. Get Involved: What will the winning score be?published at 16:33 BST

So far only Wyndham Clark has really threatened to post a score, with his six under par two shots better than anyone else has got near.

But what do you think the winning mark will be come Sunday evening?

  9. Schauffele in the mixpublished at 16:32 BST

    Schauffele -2 (12*)

The art of plotting around a tough golf course comes naturally to Xander Schauffele, who has three birdies as part of a clean card so far today.

He's very close to another at the third (his 12th), hanging it inches to the right.

If he can pick up another couple of shots on the way home, he won't be far away from the final group tomorrow.

  10. Clark birdie stretches leadpublished at 16:30 BST

    Clark -6, D Johnson -1, Woodland +1 (12)

Well, it's another bogey for DJ and three shots since he closed within one of Wyndham Clark.

Indeed, he's now five behind the leader who capitalises on the best approach of the round so far to the 12th pin with a bonus birdie.

Hardest hole of the course? Lead increased.

  11. Tree trouble for Johnsonpublished at 16:23 BST

    Clark -5, D Johnson -2, Woodland E (11)

Far from ideal from Dustin Johnson as his back swing hits the tree branch protruding above his head.

His shot goes about 60 yards and remains in thick rough.

His challenge is coming unstuck right now.

  12. Fitz going backwardspublished at 16:21 BST

    Fitzpatrick -1, DeChambeau +3, Hovland +6 (12)

Matt Fitzpatrick has just hit a big speed bump with back-to-back bogeys steering him in the wrong direction.

This time it's an errant tee shot on the 12th that puts him miles out of position and he can only hack it out, then find the green and hope to make a 35-foot putt to save par. He almost does you know, but has to make do with a bogey.

The ship just needs to be steadied.

  13. Postpublished at 16:21 BST

    Clark -5, D Johnson -2, Woodland E (11)

Golf shot! Majestic there from Wyndham Clark to loft his approach at the 12th from 157 yards to about five feet.

What a chance to break his birdie duck for the round.

Meanwhile, Dustin Johnson is continuing to discuss his options with a rules official.

  14. Rahm loses coolpublished at 16:21 BST

    Rahm E, Rose -1, Spieth +4 (9)

Jon Rahm tenses up and swears as his ball agonisingly misses the hole.

I can feel his frustration. That was a 10-footer for birdie.

  15. Postpublished at 16:19 BST

    D Johnson -2 (11)

What is Dustin Johnson doing in the trees?

He's actually not that far off the fairway but is basically taking his second shot down 12 off the path.

Needs to hold it together here after that double bogey.

  16. Birdie for MacIntyrepublished at 16:15 BST

    MacIntyre E (10*)

Birdie time! There's the Bob MacIntyre fist pump.

He brilliantly curls in a 15-foot putt.

    He absolutely loved that one.

  17. Shinnecock there for the taking?published at 16:12 BST

    Gavin Andrews
BBC Sport NI at Shinnecock Hills

A view of the course from the grandstand

This is a tamer test on day two.

The wind is down by about 10 mph and the course remains soft. This side of the draw need to make hay.

We’ve a significant couple of hours ahead as they bid to pull clear of the later starters.

  18. Postpublished at 16:09 BST

    D Johnson -2 (11)

That's the hole Dustin Johnson made bogey at on the back nine here in 2018 when gunning for the title against eventual winner Brooks Koepka.

Not a fan of the 11th.

  19. Punishing double bogey for Johnsonpublished at 16:08 BST

    Clark -5, D Johnson -2, Woodland E (11)

Just as we got excited about a bit of jeopardy at the top of the leaderboard, Shinnecock Hills bites back.

The par-three 11th is the second hardest hole on the course, as Dustin Johnson finds out as first his tee shot rolls into the bunker, then his splash out lands on the green but rolls back into the adjacent sand trap.

In the end, he's left with nine feet just to escape with bogey, which he misses. A killer.

The only saving grace? Wyndham Clark can't profit from an 11-foot birdie chance so doesn't move further away.

  20. Pars for Rose & Rahmpublished at 16:06 BST

    Rahm E, Rose -1, Spieth +4 (8)

Justin Rose does well to save par after finding himself out of position.

He is two under for the day and is playing some excellent golf.

Jon Rahm makes par to end his bogey run.
