On Connor Metcalfe: "He's probably the fittest that he's been with us, he got a couple of games with St Pauli before he arrived into camp and you can see the benefit of that. He's put in a lot of work and I'm happy he got a goal. We keep asking him to shoot more and he should do better with his left foot. It's perfect he should score."

Australia have defeated a Uefa opponent for the first time since a 1-0 win against Denmark in November 2022 and this 2-0 win against Turkey is the first time they’ve scored two or more goals against European opposition since a 2-1 win against Hungary in June 2018.

I'm probably the least surprised. I know what is in that dressing room in terms of Australia spirit and not by chance they won. They were deserving, they set up a certain way. They were deserving and disciplined.

Two lovely finishes for Australia today, with the first from Nestory Irankunda and the second from Connor Metcalfe.

A reminder that because of the format, winning today might be enough for Australia to earn a place in the knock-outs.

Looking back at recent World Cups and applying similar logic - but with three third-placed teams through in those cases - only in 2010 would four points have been required.

• 2014: Five third-placed teams had three points. A goal difference of -1 was required.
• 2010: Four points would have been required.
• 2006: Only one third-placed team earned more than three points. A goal difference of -2 was enough with three points.
• 2002: Four teams gained three points or fewer. A goal difference of zero was needed.
• 1998: Six third-placed teams gained more than three points. A goal difference of -5 would have been enough to advance.
