Clarke shuts down talk of cotton wool treatment before Bolivia
Head coach Steve Clarke says he still has “16 decisions“ to make as he ponders his Scotland side for next Sunday’s World Cup opener against Haiti.
The Scots play their final pre-tournament friendly against Bolivia on Saturday in Harrison, New Jersey - live across the BBC - before ending the country’s 28-year wait for a return to a men's final in Boston next Saturday.
And though Clarke lost Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour to injury in last Saturday’s Hampden send-off game against Curacao, the head coach said his focus will be on “preparation not protection” against the South Americans.
“Every decision, when you get to a major tournament, is a big decision,” he said after travelling north with the squad from Miami.
“I've probably got 16 [decisions] in terms of who starts and who goes on the pitch. There's always places up for grabs.”

Scotland will face Bolivia for the first time but Clarke was faced with more questions about group rivals Haiti, following their 4-0 thumping of New Zealand on Tuesday.
He was quick to highlight that some fans “have a terrible habit of looking at these nations and thinking they are not very good or looking at where they are ranked in the world.
“They play in a different section of the world, so maybe in their section they're really good,“ said Clarke. “They were much better than New Zealand.
"I was never under any illusion that it was going to be a tough game. It's probably nice that some people got to see how they played, because they now know it's going to be a difficult game for us.”
That is why Clarke - who outlined his priorities for Saturday as “no injuries, performance, result” - was quick to stress that this weekend's game would be a “straightforward selection“ with the main event looming large.
He added there are no "major" injury concerns, just a few players with "little grumbling things".
“Some players need minutes,” the head coach said. “I need to see one or two players in positions on the pitch and then we've got a week to prepare for the first game.
“There's no trying to protect players or whatever, injuries, unfortunately, are part and parcel of football. We don't expect any, but you never know.”

Match stats
This will be the first ever meeting between these two sides and Bolivia first ever game against a team from the British isles.
Bolivia have won just one of their last 21 matches against European opposition (D4 L16), beating Andorra 1-0 in March 2024.
Scotland have won two of their last four friendlies (L2) after only winning two of 16 prior (D4 L10). They are winless in six matches against South American opposition (D1 L5), since a 2-1 win over Ecuador in Japan in May 1995.
Scotland have scored four in two of their last four games, going goalless in the other two. They had netted more than three in just one of their 36 games prior across all competitions, and in four of their first 73 games under Clarke.
Scotland have conceded in each of their last seven games in all competitions – they last failed to keep a clean sheet in eight consecutive matches between October 2002 and June 2003.
Lawrence Shankland has scored three goals across his last two Scotland games- as many as across his first 17 international outings. The last player to net in three straight appearances was Lyndon Dykes in October 2021.
