Everton boss David Moyes speaking to Sky Sports: "It ended up a bit more comfortable than I thought it might’ve been but obviously a really good result. We played well at times, our football was quite good. We needed to finish things off a bit better in the first half but really pleased we scored four goals."

On Thierno Barry and his motivation: "I told him he has to do a lot better than he did before, that’s it. We want goalscorers, we want centre forwards to score goals and he’s got some.

"I don’t think it’s easy for anybody coming to the Premier League in their first season, especially centre forwards, it’s difficult for them. He’ll learn a lot more, he’ll see a lot more and he’s come in with a much better attitude generally so whoever’s working with him is doing a good job."

On Brennan Johnson and whether he can find his home at Everton: "We want to find what he did at Tottenham when he was scoring all those goals. His assist was a brilliant assist and his finish as well. The people who’ve watched Brennan over the years would tell you that looks a bit more like him… we don’t want to bring him on too quick we want to sort of introduce him but he’s done well when he’s come on tonight."

On whether fans can get carried away at the moment: "No they can’t. I think we’ve got a lot of work to do and I still feel that for us to be a side which is competitive I still feel that we’ve got a lot of work to do. Hopefully we’re able to try and do some of it.

"More players. Our squad’s not big enough. We need to get more quality in some areas if we can do."

On whether he feels they will be able to do that before the window closes: "I’m not sure we will but it’s not for the want of trying that’s for sure."

Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes scored twice against West Brom to help the Magpies progress in the Carabao Cup setting up a third round tie with Millwall.

On their ambition in the competition: "A few of the older players that are here have that, that taste of glory, that's what we want. The manager has had some success in his career and he wants that as well, that is why he has come here so there's a real emphasis on that. The ultimate goal is to go all the way."

Substitute Harvey Barnes scored twice as Newcastle United survived a scare against Championship side West Brom to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

A sold-out St James' Park was rocking before kick-off after new signing Nico Gonzalez was presented to the crowd following his £52m move from Manchester City.

However, the home support were left stunned when West Brom forward Isaac Price opened the scoring against the 2025 cup winners with a clever free-kick.

Newcastle had expected Price to swing a delivery into the box from 25 yards out, but the in-form forward caught goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen out at his near post by instead curling the ball around the wall and into the bottom corner.

The hosts responded just a few minutes before half-time, though, when Amar Dedic's teasing cross was knocked in by Bazoumana Toure.

The summer signing ghosted in between West Brom defenders Chris Mepham and Alex Williams to score on his competitive debut following his £43m move from Hoffenheim.

Although Toure was substituted at the break, his replacement, Barnes, quickly made an impact.

The former Leicester winger raced into the box and lashed the ball into the net after West Brom failed to clear their lines following his initial effort from outside the area.

West Brom rallied this time, however, and the visitors were awarded a penalty after Harry Whitwell's cross struck the hand of Lewis Hall inside the box.

Price stepped up from the spot to score his second of the night after coolly sending Jaouen the wrong way.

There was still time for Barnes to step up again and finish from Dedic's cross to send Newcastle into the last 32 and spare his side a nervy penalty shootout.

Bradford City caused an upset by dumping Burnley out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

Both sides spurned presentable chances to win the game inside 90 minutes, but with nothing separating them, it came down to a penalty shootout in front of 20,000 fans at a lively Valley Parade.

Adam Phillips struck the winning penalty for the Bantams after Switzerland international Zeki Amdouni had hit the post for Burnley and Jacob Bruun Larsen's effort was saved by Jon McCracken.

Bradford, who are the early pacesetters in League One and have yet to concede a goal so far this season, will visit Leyton Orient in the third round after the draw was made following Wednesday's matches.

Meanwhile, Burnley's wait for a first win in normal time under new boss Nicky Hayen goes on, having required penalties to beat Notts County in the first round and still without a victory in the Championship.

Thierno Barry scored his first Everton hat-trick as the Premier League side thrashed Preston North End to set up a home tie against Wolves in the Carabao Cup third round.

Summer signing Brennan Johnson also ended his goal drought with his first for the Toffees as David Moyes' side cruised past the Championship club.

Moyes, who spent four years as Preston manager, fielded a strong Everton side with only three changes from their opening-weekend win against Crystal Palace.

The Blues dominated from the off and Barry broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when he tapped home after Vitalii Mykolenko crossed following a superb pass from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Preston were winless in their first two Championship games of the season and manager Paul Heckingbottom made seven changes from their defeat by Wolves at the weekend, but they could have found a way back into this if Leo Leroy had hit the target with a decent opportunity inside the area.

Tyler Dibling then hit the post while the creative Iliman Ndiaye put in a fine cross for Barry but the Everton forward headed just wide.

Barry did get his second goal just before the hour mark after Dewsbury-Hall's fierce strike was pushed back into the Everton striker's path by Preston goalkeeper Lee Nicholls and he reacted quickly to divert the ball home.

Callum Lang gave Everton keeper Jordan Pickford some work to do with an ambitious overhead kick, but Barry then secured the match ball when he finished off a fine move by turning home substitute Johnson's cross in the 70th minute.

Johnson, who joined from Palace this summer, then scored his first goal since November as he struck a low effort into the net after a through ball from Barry with 18 minutes to go.

New signing Savio marked his Tottenham debut with a goal off the substitutes' bench as Spurs hammered Charlton Athletic to book a Carabao Cup third-round tie at Liverpool.

The Brazil winger, signed from Manchester City for an initial £75m, was given a standing ovation when he came on in the 71st minute with Spurs leading 3-0.

He made it 4-0 11 minutes after coming on after dancing past a couple of players before finding the net from the edge of the box.

Savio, who celebrated by lifting a corner flag in the air, was also heavily involved when Ben Davies scored Spurs' fifth in the 85th-minute as the hosts, who have spent £300m-plus in the summer transfer window, puts last Saturday's dismal defeat by Brentford behind them.

Two goals in four minutes towards the end of the first half put Roberto de Zerbi's side in control against their Championship opponents at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs had though struggled to make an impact against a much-changed Charlton side before Mikey Moore broke the deadlock in the 41st-minute.

Moore struck from the edge of the box with a rasping drive into the top corner, the 19-year-old's first goal in a Spurs shirt since January 2025.

England forward Dominic Solanke added the second with a right-foot finish in the 45th minute after turning inside the box.

It’s been a little while, a bit longer than I wanted but when I came here I wanted to make sure I do everything right to give myself a chance to start bright and yeah… perfect game, buzzing for the big man but I’m also really happy to score myself.

"When I came here, all the lads were so good with me, made me feel really welcome and I think it helps to play with confidence on the pitch, so big shoutout to the boys. I feel comfortable already and I'm loving life."

On confidence: "I think being trusted in this team, it’s an amazing club and yeah just being out there I’m really enjoying it and feeling a bit more confident which is nice."

On keeping up the momentum: "So far it’s been really positive. It’s a good feeling, as long as we keep playing to the best that we can and give everything, hopefully we can keep these good moments going. It’s exciting times but obviously a massive game at the weekend but we want to keep being positive."

So some cracking ties in that one, with Liverpool versus Tottenham the standout one. Premier League champions Arsenal travel to Ipswich Town, while Carabao Cup holders Manchester City entertain Norwich City.

Manchester United take on Brighton, while Chelsea will play Leeds if Xabi Alonso's side get past Luton Town tomorrow, with Coventry v Aston Villa and Sunderland v Hull City other all-Premier League ties.
