Northampton sign Dale and add Chambers and Powell on loan

Northampton Town have signed free agent winger Owen Dale on a 12-month deal, and midfielder Sam Chambers and defender Josh Powell on loan.

Dale, 27, was a member of Oxford United's League One promotion-winning team in 2025 but was a free agent after being released by the U's at the end of last season, which he spent on loan at Plymouth Argyle.

Chambers, 19, made his Leeds United debut as a substitute in a 3-0 Championship win over Plymouth in 2024 and his first start followed in an FA Cup tie away to Millwall in February last year.

It is his first loan away from Elland Road but 21-year-old Powell already has League Two experience, having made 27 appearances during temporary spells at Colchester United and Fleetwood Town last season.

"Josh will provide depth and competition in the back line. He is a player who can play at full back or across the back line and someone who I know Nottingham Forest think highly of," manager Chris Hogg told the club website., external.

On Chambers' arrival, he said: "We first spoke a couple of months ago and he has turned down some opportunities from a higher level to come here and to be a part of what we are trying to do and that's really encouraging."

Northampton Town have been as busy as its fans hoped they would be on this deadline day. Chris Hogg has signed three players to plug the obvious gaps in his squad.

Defender Josh Powell comes in on loan from Nottingham Forest to relieve the pressure on left-back James Maxwell.

Attacking midfielder Sam Chambers comes in on loan from Leeds United to strengthen the forward positions.

The most eye-catching piece of business undoubtedly is the signing of winger Owen Dale, who has spent the last six seasons playing in either League One or the Championship, and at 27 years old seems a real coup for the Cobblers.

Hogg's side have been crying out for a natural right-sided midfielder and Dale may well be the answer.

Overall the club can feel pretty satisfied with the business they've done today.
