Warwickshire and opponents Notts have the chance to replace Somerset at the top of Division One this week.

It's advantage The Bears after the first day's play at Trent Bridge, thanks to 134 not out by Ed Barnard, and despite the best efforts of England's Josh Tongue, who took 5-91.

Gus Atkinson only managed one wicket on his return to action for Surrey as Essex reached 325-6 and Zak Crawley failed to boost his Test chances by scoring just 27 for Kent.

It's been a very eventful day and we look forward to another one tomorrow. Join us then from 10:40.

    Derbyshire v Gloucestershire 287-6

Miles Hammond and Ed Middleton survive the final over of the day from Zak Chappell and Gloucestershire reach stumps in a much healthier position than seemed likely when they were 167-6.

Hammond has played a superb hand for his team, hitting an unbeaten 140, including two sixes and 15 fours, and Middleton's unbeaten 41 in their stand of 120 is his highest score in first-class cricket.

Undoubted moment of the day, though, was the dismissal of Graeme van Buuren, who pulled a ball from Shoaib Bashir (2-51) straight at short leg Matthew Montgomery, who somehow took the catch.

You really need to see the video for that one - incredible!!

It has been a fascinating day of county cricket at Trent Bridge between second-placed Warwickshire and third-placed Nottinghamshire who are, of course, aiming to defend their 2025 crown this season.

The Bears, put in in the morning, finished day one on 375-8 having been spearheaded by captain Ed Barnard, who will return to the crease on Saturday morning on 134* having arrived in the middle with his side in the precarious position of 97-4.

Dan Mousley had contributed with 49 earlier in the day, but the impressive Josh Tongue led Notts' flurry of wickets in the morning and afternoon and ended the day with deserving figures of 5-91. The partnership of Barnard and Chris Woakes (64) was worth 116 and frustrated the champions, however.

Warwickshire will feel as though they are on top at the close of play, having scored at just shy of 4 runs per over throughout the day, and they will aim to add at least another batting bonus point before Notts begin their reply.

  6. Close of play at the Ovalpublished at 18:43 BST 24 April

    Surrey v Essex 325-6

It's been an enthralling day's cricket at the Oval where Surrey fought back strongly after a great start by Essex.

Dean Elgar and Paul Walter put on 183 for the first wicket but the former's dismissal for 92 by Jordan Clark put new life into the home side who stifled the scoring rate after lunch.

Walter made 101 but his dismissal saw Essex decline from 248-2 to 262-5 in the space of four overs and England's Gus Atkinson added the wicket of Michael Pepper with the second new ball.

Simon Harmer and Noah Thain - who ends the day on 33 not out - swap singles in the final over of play, bowled by Tom Lawes.

  7. Close of play at Headingleypublished at 18:43 BST 24 April

    Yorkshire v Sussex 373-6

John Simpson ended up with 13 runs from that final over and his innings has put his side in the ascendancy at stumps on day one.

His partnership with Tom Price (93) was worth 165 and came at a time in the contest when things were fairly even - maybe even Yorkshire had the upper hand with Sussex 150-5 - but it's certainly the visitors who will be the happier now.

Earlier on, Tom Haines made 64 and James Coles 47 as Yorkshire took three wickets in the morning session.

But the hosts managed only three more dismissals across the afternoon and evening and will need to rouse themselves for a big start tomorrow morning.

Miles Hammond and Ed Middleton post a 100 partnership for Gloucestershire as the former pulls a short ball from Martin Andersson for four. Derbyshire were well on top when Graeme van Buuren fell to Shoaib Bashir, but these two have given the visitors a great chance of a total well in excess of 300.

  12. Close of play at Cardiffpublished at 18:29 BST 24 April

    Glamorgan 334-7 v Leicestershire

Stumps at Sophia Gardens and it's been an excellent fight back from Glamorgan.

Superb knocks from captain Kiran Carlson (95) and Sean Dickson (90) has swung the pendulum slightly back towards the home side on day one.

Glamorgan were 91-4 at lunch, with Ian Holland and Josh Hull grabbing a pair of wickets each, as Leicestershire threatened to bowl out the hosts within the first three sessions after losing the toss.

Mason Crane (48 not out) will return to the crease with Tim van der Gugten (22 not out) tomorrow morning with good weather expected throughout the weekend in South Wales.

  13. Close of play at New Roadpublished at 18:28 BST 24 April

    Worcestershire 94-1 v Kent 196

That's it for the day on the banks of the River Severn in Worcester.

The crowd has enjoyed the entertainment in the sunshine and we close with Worcestershire trailing Kent by 102 runs with nine wickets in hand.

Jake Libby is on 52 not out and will resume with Kashif Ali in the morning.

Earlier, Matt Milnes' 50 gave Kent's total a much-needed late boost as they fell to 99-7 and 155-9.

Zak Crawley got a start but couldn't keep it going as he was caught behind for 27 off 42 balls.

    Notts v Warwickshire 351-8

That is the end of Josh Tongue's most recent spell - it is another very impressive burst that he has provided for his team.

Michael Booth added another boundary off the bowling of Brett Hutton in the last over, and that brought up a third batting point for the Bears. We have eight overs scheduled left in the day.

  18. Postpublished at 18:15 BST 24 April

    Worcestershire 86-1 v Kent 196

Jake Libby is steering the Pears along nicely in the beautiful evening sunshine.

He is four away from a half-century, supported by Kashif Ali on 15.

There are only two overs left at New Road.

  19. Postpublished at 18:14 BST 24 April

    Notts v Warwickshire 345-8

Josh Tongue is not far away from a sixth wicket there. Warwickshire's number 10 Michael Booth plays outside off and Tongue finds a genuine edge.

The ball flies just out of the reach of Jack Haynes at third slip and runs down to the boundary for four more Bears runs.

Ed Barnard has been the spine of this innings - he is still standing on 124.

  20. Close of play at Durhampublished at 18:13 BST 24 April

    Durham v Lancashire 356-7

Stumps on day one at Durham and it's the visitors that will be happier with their day's work.

It's been a batting masterclass on the opening day at Chester-le-Street by Australian left-hander Marcus Harris.

His 135 not out has put the Red Rose in a dominant position - playing with elegance but also the grit and determination a long innings requires.

He had to battle to keep his wicket early doors but after getting in, he showed some really classy touches, especially in the off side, hitting 19 boundaries on day one.

After Durham won the toss, there were a few surprises that they decided to put Lancashire into bat, but the gamble looked like it might pay off once Michael Jones was dismissed with the score 144-4.

However, the visitors fought back on day one, and Harris' terrific ton, as well as important cameos from Matty Hurst (32) and Paul Coughlin (31) - added to by Tom Bailey who will return to the crease tomorrow morning 27 not out - means day one belongs to Division Two league-leaders Lancashire.
