Day one of the penultimate round of this season's County Championship has not disappointed.

A remarkable 123 wickets fell across the grounds today as bowlers made hay. Glamorgan are already into their second innings against Surrey and a few other games were close to seeing 20 wickets fall too.

We're no nearer to knowing who will pull ahead in the battle for the Division One title with the three teams involved - Somerset, Notts and Warks - all in tricky situations with plenty of work to do.

It's a similar story at the top of Division Two with promotion hopefuls Northants and Kent's games both evenly poised.

Brett Hutton finishes with a flourish for Nottinghamshire with two fours from Jaydev Unadkat.

And with that, a hard-fought first day comes to an end at Hove.

Sussex were well on top of proceedings when they reduced Notts to 150-8.

But a 74-run partnership between Tom Giles, who made 32, and Brett Hutton, who ends the day unbeaten on 59, has dragged the defending champions right back into it.

Day two will likely tell us a lot more about just how good a score this is for Notts once Sussex have had a bat.

A day most memorable for the 151 made by Derbyshire skipper Wayne Madsen, with a more than honourable mention for Ben Aitchison's 106.

Liam Guthrie, Ben Sanderson and Harry Conway all took three wickets for the hosts as they bowled out Derbyshire for 372.

Northants openers Ricardo Vasconcelos and Luke Procter saw out a tricky ten overs to bring the day to a close with all ten wickets intact.

The hosts will be aiming for some batting points on day two as they look to boost their promotion hopes.

Kent continue to chip away at the Lancashire first innings lead and Zak Crawley has moved onto 68 with a four from the final ball of Mitch Stanley's over.

That brings up the 150 for Kent, who are within 10 runs of Lancashire.

And that is the last action of the day as the umpires come together and decide enough is enough with the light fading.

The home side might feel they have just about edged a very tight, low-scoring first day with three wickets still in hand.

Either way, this is perfectly poised for day two.

Mukesh Kumar is in for a bat on his Notts debut. Can he stick around for a bit longer with Brett Hutton? The visitors would love to get to 250 for a bating point if they can.

Sussex v Notts 223-8

Well batted Brett Hutton.

He picks up a single off Jaydev Unadkat and moves through to 50 from 112 balls.

An excellent effort by Hutton to steady the ship for Notts and turn this first innings into a respectable one. He's been out in the middle for just over two-and-a-half hours.

Zak Crawley and Jimmy Anderson have time for a quick chat after Crawley pushes his former England team-mate for a single to cover. They're all smiles. Nice to see.

Two balls into James Taylor's latest over, the umpires decide the light isn't good enough to continue at the Oval - and it's job done so far by Glamorgan's openers at the start of their second innings.

A crazy day saw a fox pay a prolonged visit to the outfield during the morning session and 20 wickets fall, with Surrey failing to even match the 132 all out by the visitors.

Auqib Nabi took four wickets in Glamorgan's first innings in which Jack Hope-Bell's 33 was the highest score.

No-one got past 30 for Surrey as Zain ul-Hassan (4-26) and Timm van der Gugten (3-31) exploited helpful conditions to roll them over in 33 overs.

Sussex v Notts 222-8

Nottinghamshire have done very well to bat for 80 overs, considering they were 150-8 in the 58th over.

Sussex will likely be extremely frustrated they've reached the stage where they're taking the new ball.

But here we are. Credit to the defending champions for sticking at it this evening.

Jaydev Unadkat will bowl the first over with the new ball for the hosts.

Lovely shot by Tom Giles to push through the covers for four from Jack Carson. Are we sure he bats at number 10? Giles is onto 32 and Notts are within 28 runs of a batting point.

Too much width from Auqib Nabi and Zain ul-Hassan deflects it down past the slips for four runs. James Taylor will continue from the other end with four overs of play remaining.

Zak Crawley gets into the groove and dances down the track to Tom Bailey to smash him for four back past the bowler.

Kent's first target is to wipe out Lancashire's lead. They need another 26 runs to do so.

James Rew sees out the final over of the day, bowled by Kuldeep Yadav and survives a torrid session of play for Somerset on 17 not out.

Craig Overton has seven.

Somerset lost both openers early and the scoring ground to a near halt thereafter.

Archie Vaughan got off the mark with a six pulled over square leg off the short bowling of Ben Cliff, but there were very few freebies after that from a disciplined Yorkshire attack this evening.

Vaughan and Tom Abell full in successive deliveries to Cliff.

Matthew Revis prized Henry Nicholls out shortly before the close and will no doubt have thanked George Hill for a brilliant one-handed grab in the slips to complete the dismissal.

Zak Crawley goes to his half-century and, in truth, is the only batter who has made a significant contribution for Kent in this first innings.

Crawley clips through the leg-side to bring up his fourth 50 of the County Championship season.

It's taken him 84 balls and he's hit seven fours and one six.

Into the dying embers of day one at Northampton with the home side looking to see out the final four overs of play without loss.

Ricardo Vasconcelos and Luke Procter are sensibly taking no chances.

Matt Milnes gets of the mark with a four through the off-side from Mitch Stanley.
