England have beaten Sri Lanka by 223 runs at The Oval in the third and final one-day international to win the three-match series 2-1 - take a read of Matthew Henry's report to see how the game played out.

England ODI coach Brendon McCullum, speaking to TMS: "Really positively. We have seen both white ball teams grow over the summer.

"Ultimately, we continued to improve our style of play. Become more familiar with it and be creative with it in contradicting conditions. I feel we have improved as a side, and we're a bit more rounded.

"In T20 cricket we're going well, but for me another pleasing aspect is I still think there is growth in that side. When it comes to our one-day side we know where we sit in the ladder. We need to keep challenging ourselves.

"As we move to the World Cup, which we will be challenging. For that, you need to be extremely fit. That will be the focus over the next little while. One thing which pleases me about today is we obviously made three changes.

"We had numerous injuries. Buttler, Bethell, Sam Curran, Rashid, four big players to take out of one side. Then you see Tom Banton at the top of the order, who has been superb in this series.

"Cox was brilliant Dawson, the experience he has got. Sonny Baker, the wicket he took at the start of the day we identified it was in the area that is where we needed to improve. Sonny has got some of those X Factor skills as well.

"We are going to need depth across the squad for when we get to South Africa."

On Kevin Pietersen's coaching: "He's obviously an incredible player, him and I have a good relationship. We have a great working relationship. He is exactly what we need at this moment in time. He is unbelievably respectful about giving feedback, and he thinks in a slightly different way, which I like."

On the busy summer: "It has been eventful, but I genuinely think there are so many twists and turns, a lot of things unfolding but I generally feel English cricket is in a really good place right now."

England captain Harry Brook, speaking at the presentation: "I thought that was a near-perfect performance. Everyone chipped in beautifully and it was an exceptional win.

"There were some tough periods [with the bat]. Some tough periods where it was difficult to get off strike but I thought the patience we showed, knowing we could catch up at the back end, was great. The running between the wickets at the back end was exceptional.

"Tom Banton the way he played was outstanding. He thoroughly deserved that and I'm proud of him."

On the conditions: "It's something we talk about a lot. We want to adapt conditions every game. Not every pitch is the game, outfields are different, overheads are different. That's the side we want to be - winning when conditions are not in our favour. When they are in our favour we want to nail sides."

On selection dilemmas: "It's definitely a good problem to have. We said before the series we are building towards a squad with that you feel if someone goes down someone can come in and fill that role. We saw that with Sonny Baker, Matthew Potts and Liam Dawson. It feels like we are building towards a strong squad."

England captain Harry Brook, speaking to TMS: "That was a near perfect ODI for us there. I thought we were outstanding. The way Bants [Tom Banton] batted, there were some tricky moments with the bat. We knew the period from 20 to 40 overs was going to be important.

"The way we batted in the last 20 overs was exceptional as well. Then the way we bowled was top draw.

"We want to be one of the fittest, strongest, robust, high-octane cricket teams. We have got to work hard away from the game, try and become that team that can perform again like that if we play against tomorrow.

"We want to be fit, we want to be strong and we want to be adaptable. I am absolutely fine. I have said countless times I love playing cricket for England. I am just trying to enjoy every moment I wear the shirt.

"I am always smiling. What's not to love? Playing cricket for your country in front of good crowds. In a series-defining match, the lads have stood up and showed their worth. An exceptional day to be part of English cricket."

On Tom Banton: "Unbelievable. To come in for these three games and stand up. To top it off, and go get a hundred, today was outstanding. He has got the ability to play spin, right hand and left-handed. He has cashed in today and he fully deserves it."

"We go over to Pakistan in mid-October, and we will try to go out there and try to do the same things. It will be slightly different with the lower, skiddy wickets."

Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis, speaking at the presentation: "I think we've played a couple of good games and sometimes we have played very good cricket. Today's game we struggled with our batting obviously and we made some mistakes, dropping catches and bad fielding myself included.

"We played good cricket in the second game. We are going to Pakistan after this tour and we have to play better cricket. I think we are making too many mistakes. We have to learn so many things."

Player of the match Tom Banton: "As a kid you dream of scoring a hundred for your country and to do it here in an important game is really special. I had a lot of friends and family here so it was really cool.

"I started really well [in international cricket] then had a tough few years and then come back now and put in performance like that is rewarding. I've had a tough few years so it's really special."

On Kevin Pietersen's impact: "Yes it's been really good. You are a bit nervous round him - you don't want to say the wrong things - but I played a round of golf with him and we've chatted a lot. Behind the scenes we've chatted a lot - some banter between us - and he's been amazing and hopefully it continues."

On opening: "I am happy batting wherever really. Jacob Bethell has been injured and that's given me an opportunity but wherever I am asked to bat, I am happy to do it."

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis, speaking to TMS: "I think we did badly in the fielding, then dropped a little bit of catches.

"Then that's why they scored more than 300. I think we started well in the powerplay, I think after the powerplay we gave away back-to-back wickets and that is why their guys come into the game.

"Honestly, I think some bowlers are doing well Wellalage, and Colombage did well in the UK. Very hard to come first time in the UK.

"Some batters are doing well. Overall, we played a couple of good games."

It was going to be hard. England being as powerful as they are, they have changed their mindset. They're pushing games to the zone they like. There are certain times they go into their shell, but it is straight after that they express themselves and the proper skills come out.

England player of the series Will Jacks, speaking to TMS: "Of course, very happy. On a personal note, I'm very happy with how I performed in the situations I have been out in. To finish the summer with two series victories we're all very happy with.

"I feel really confident growing with every series. I think every game you play you experience different scenarios. Any series decider is a big match. It feels like mimicking World Cup pressure situations which were obviously building to in 12 months time."

I have been impressed with Jordan Cox. Everything that has been asked of him, he has gone out and done. That builds that confidence.

You can see a change in mindset. England were nowhere 12 months ago. Something had to change.

I don't think Tom Banton was troubled at all in this innings.

It was like he was on a different pitch, and it was really, really good to see.

This was not an easy opportunity, so to react to that pressure was outstanding.

Tom Banton grabbed hold of it.

Ben Duckett went for a duck, and Banton went through different phases of his innings.

He absorbed pressure when he came on, then slowly got into his knock.

The pace and tempo of his innings was very nice. I was impressed with him.

He is a very good player against spin. It was his 10th game and he has got his hundred, and he will be over the moon with that.
