Amy Williams and Lauren Gowen opened their Commonwealth Games campaign with a 2-0 victory in the women's bowls pairs against Canada duo Emma Boyd and Kelly McKerihen.

The Welsh team won the sets 9-2, 6-4 to follow in the footsteps of team-mate Ross Owen who sealed victory in his opening men's singles contest.

"I am really chuffed with how we have started off," said Gowen.

"We played well and the result went our way."

The victorious team were met by Team Wales chef de mission Gethin Jones who congratulated them on the success.

"It is nice to get going early and gain some momentum and confidence," said Williams.

"We would rather that than waiting around, so we are keeping busy."

Williams and Gowen are next in action against Fiji on Friday evening.

Bowler Ross Owen kicked off the Team Wales campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a comfortable 2-0 men's singles victory against Mohammed Ayub Qureshi from Pakistan.

Owen, 32 from Merthyr Tydfil, won the two sets 12-5 and 17-0 and is next in action against England's Sam Tolchard on Friday.

This is Owen's third Games having won a bronze medal as part of the men's triples in Birmingham in 2022.

"Thankfully I settled in quite well and made a good start," said Owen.

"Hopefully there are good things to come from Team Wales from now on."

The bowlers were the first Welsh competitors in action in Glasgow as they competed on Thursday before the evening's opening ceremony at the Hydro.

Defending champion Rosie Eccles and Niamh Brookes are one win away from a Commonwealth Games' medal following Wednesday's draw.

Light-middleweight Eccles, who will be the Team Wales flag bearer at the opening ceremony, and flyweight Brookes will enter the competition at the quarter-final stage next week with the pair in action on Wednesday in Glasgow.

Anybody who reaches the semi-final is guaranteed a medal.

Light-heavyweight Daniel Pitt is the first Welsh boxer in action on Saturday evening in the last 32 of the 80kg section when he faces Dee Ioapo of Samoa.

Connor Williams, Helen Jones, Orlando Holley-Sotomi and Owain Harris-Allan have been drawn in the last 16 stage.

Bantamweight Jones faces Kadijat Ajishola in the women's 54kg section on the morning of Sunday 26 July, while heavyweight Williams will take on Namibia's Petrus Jacobus Kotze in the evening at 21:15 BST.

Lightweight Harris-Allan, who won Commonwealth Games bronze in Birmingham, starts his campaign against Niven Chemben for Mauritius in the men's 60kg category on the morning of Monday, 27 July.

An hour later, light-middleweight Holley-Sotomi faces England's Paddy Hewitt in the men's 70kg category.

The lawn bowlers will be the first athletes from Team Wales in action at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

They will compete on Thursday morning before the evening's opening ceremony at the Hydro.

Ross Owen is in men's singles action against Mohammed Ayub Qureshi from Pakistan at the SEC from 12:20 BST.

This will be Owen's third Games having won bronze as part of the men's triples in Birmingham in 2022.

Amy Williams and Lauren Gowen will then compete in the women's pairs against Canada at 15:10 BST.

Maddy Connelly has withdrawn from the 2026 Commonwealth Games because of injury.

Connelly was one of seven weightlifters included in Team Wales for the showpiece event in Glasgow.

But the 2025 British champion - who was due to compete in the women's 53kg category - has confirmed she sustained an injury in training, forcing her to pull out of the Games.

"To say I'm disappointed is an understatement," she wrote on Instagram.

"Representing Team Wales on the Commonwealth stage has been a huge dream of mine and it's heart-breaking not to be lining up with my team-mates in Glasgow and fighting for that place on the podium.

"Right now, my focus is on recovery. I'll take the time to heal, work hard and come back even stronger."

She added: "Although I won't be competing, I'll be supporting every member of Team Wales throughout the games and cheering them on every step of the way.

"Diolch (thanks) to everyone who has supported me on this journey. It means more than you know.

"Pob lwc Tim Cymru (good luck Team Wales)."

Gethin Jones, Team Wales Chef de Mission, said: "Everyone at Team Wales is devastated for Maddy.

"We know how much representing Wales at a Commonwealth Games means to her and the dedication, commitment and hard work she put in to earn her place on the team.

"We know this setback won't define her. Maddy is a talented athlete with a bright future ahead, and we have every confidence she'll come back stronger."

The Games in Scotland begin on Thursday, 23 July.

Nikole Roberts is the first Team Wales weightlifter in action at the Games. She will compete in the women's 48kg category on Sunday, 26 July.
