Housewife and mother Martha works tirelessly to attend to the needs of her husband Martin, their children, and weekend guests invited to their cottage in the countryside.

"So the weekend begins, the country weekend. Look forward to green fields, growing plants, good food. Two hours' drive to the cottage, two and a half hours back. Martin at the wheel. Happy families. Where's the bus? Seven thirty is only one hour fifty minutes from now. Be calm, be calm, Martha: you can do anything, everything, in one hour fifty minutes. You always have. Only why does the shopping weigh so heavy tonight? Is it that brown rice weighs heavier than white: is it that natural goodness lies heavy on the heart?"
